Lafayette Information
About Lafayette
Along the Vermilion River in Southwestern Louisiana you can find Lafayette, one of the largest cities in the state. Aptly nicknamed “the hub city,” Lafayette is the centre of Cajun and Creole culture in Louisiana. Find history, personality, and spice that your whole family can enjoy in Lafayette.
Things to do in Lafayette
Lafayette has a bunch of unique activities right at your fingertips. Downtown Lafayette houses its famous crawfish restaurants, a myriad of bars, clubs and saloons to get you acquainted with the city. A different rhythm can be found at The Children’s museum of Acadiana, with hands on exhibits and activities for kids about toddler age. The Vermilionville museum claims to be a museum of living history, as you can find a historic village and folklife park. These restored homes represent the Acadian way of life. A great place to educate yourself and your family, the museum is open until four everyday, but is closed on Mondays. Breaux Bridge, the self-titled Crawfish capital of the world, is a town in Lafayette that speaks for itself. Breaux Bridge (naturally) hosts a crawfish festival — one of the biggest Cajun celebrations you could attend. The festival is held in early May, and hosts incredible music at three different stages. Lafayette is crawling with Zydeco and Cajun music, making it a bubbly and all-around happy place to visit. Lafayette has the second largest Mardi Gras parade in Louisiana. All eight of Lafayette’s parades are wonderfully rambunctious, embodying the spirit of the festival.
Day Trips Near Lafayette
Lafayette is nearby to a number of day-trip destinations. Baton Rouge is an hour drive from Lafayette, and also holds some unforgettable Mardi Gras parades. Baton Rouge’s Mardi Gras is held downtown, except for the annual Southdowns parade. However the most popular destination when in Louisiana is, of course, New Orleans. Take a trip to the inimitable “big easy,” two and a half hours away from Lafayette, but well worth the trip. New Orleans has some of the most incredible nightlife and music spots in the states. The music scene is jazzy and iconic, as is the cuisine from the unique mix of cultures in New Orleans. The home and center of Mardi Gras, New Orleans, feels the aftershock all year round. The city is always filled with masks, frivolity and lets face it — fun.
