Waikoloa Information

About Waikoloa

Nestled in the northwest corner of the Big Island of Hawaii, just over 19 square miles of rich greenery and breathtaking lava fields make up Waikoloa, a village on the Southern Kohala Coast. Waikoloa’s seaside resorts and golf courses offer majestic views of Hawaii’s oldest major volcanic mountain amid Hawaii’s unique landscape—so relax along the beaches that make this island famous, with the rest of the Big Island’s treasures only steps away.

Things to do in Waikoloa

With most tourists flocking to the islands of Hawaii for its beaches, Waikoloa does not disappoint. Clear, calm waters and plenty of shade make Beach 69 a popular place for families and snorkeling beginners, and next door the ever-popular Hapuna Beach State Park holds international renown for its white sand and gentle surf. This family-friendly hotspot even has lifeguard stations and various rental and concessions stands. For a truly unique experience, explore the only black sand beach on the Kona Coast, 49 Black Sand Beach. In addition to its unique lava-born topography, the beach’s crystal clear waters make it a popular snorkeling site. Besides the beaches, Waikoloa has much to offer amidst its diverse and captivating landscape. With 4 golf courses, chartered boat rides, and helicopter tours through Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, the small village offers a range of things to do. Even swim with dolphins at Waikoloa’s Dolphin Quest—visitors say it’s worth the price! Don’t forget to take in some of Waikoloa’s ancient Hawaiian history, too, by walking through the Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve or taking advantage of the vast number of nature reserves in the area. When you’ve had enough of the sun, head over to Queens Marketplace in Waikoloa Village to find everything from local art galleries to popular retail stores such as Sunglass Hut. Just down the road you can continue the shopping at Kings’ Shops, where you’ll find apparel and jewelry, as well as restaurants such as Roy’s Waikoloa Bar and Grill. At both shopping centers, local services such as Big Island Jeep Tours and Hearts and Stars Salon and Day Spa offer even more ways to enjoy your stay in Waikoloa.

Day Trips from Waikoloa

The benefit of being on Hawaii’s Big Island is that you can cover virtually the entire area in just a few days, or hours, even! Drive north to hike Hawaii’s oldest major volcanic mountain in Kohala Forest Reserve, or take advantage of one of the most unique national parks in the U.S. at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There, anyone can tour fragile lava tubes, or keep your distance by taking it all in from the comfort of your vehicle, along Crater Rim Drive. Across the island, Hilo offers a different experience. As the Big Island’s largest city, Hilo is home to rich culture and museums, popular waterfalls, and even Hawaiiʻs largest independently-owned craft brewer, The Mehana Brewing Company. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, Hilo’s farmers’ markets are popular with tourists and locals alike. Close to Hilo in the Puna district, check out some of the island’s natural hot ponds, too. A dormant volcano on the Big Island, Maunakea offers a one-of-a-kind stargazing experience. Take caution and beware of altitude sickness, as Maunakea is one of the only places in the world where you can drive from sea level to 14,000 feet in about 2 hours! But if you can handle it, with its consistently clear skies Maunakea is home to 13 of the world’s most powerful telescopes for a reason.
