Jekyll Island Information

About Jekyll Island

There are few spots on this earth that are more stunning and inviting than the sprawling beaches and historic ruins of this Georgian retreat. It’s no doubt a spectacular blend of discovery and serenity that’s nicely situated within the chain of the Golden Isles just mere miles away from other beachside favorites like St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Brunswick. The Jekyll Island State Park is also coastal haven for nature lovers of all sorts, where you can see turtle crossing signs along with canopies of live oak trees, as well as a newly updated oceanfront promenade that provides visitors with shopping and dining bliss. There’s a unique experience to be found and it’s waiting just for you.

Things to Do in Jekyll Island

It happens to be the southernmost island of the Golden Isles as well as one of the most popular, as it hosts an array of family-friendly activities and attractions within its 5,700 acres. The area is particularly beautiful to visit in the spring and fall, especially with the abundance of recreational activities available that are sure to please visitors of all ages. Stroll along ten miles of white sand beaches, play at more than sixty holes of golf, splash around at the Summer Waves Water park, reel in some big ones on the fishing pier, or take a dolphin or horseback riding tour before riding along 20 miles of bike trails over to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, which provides state-of-the-art emergency care to sick and injured sea turtles. What’s more is that Jekyll Island offers some of the most diverse shopping around-- from upscale boutiques to souvenir shops—not to mention superb seafood that’s always freshly featured in fabulous sit-down fare and southern favorites!

Jekyll Island Day Trips

The island in itself is owned the State of Georgia and managed by the Jekyll Island Authority, which limits its development to just 1,609 acres in order to preserve the critical barrier island ecosystem. Great lengths have been taken to honor this ratio, so since most of the island is protected, there are plenty of nature and wildlife to explore. Let’s just say that Jekyll Island is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, with miles upon miles of long sandy beaches, vast expanses of maritime forests and preserved wetlands, as well as a sort of rugged coastal beauty that’s hard to find anyplace else. Explore the area with a quick weekend getaway that includes dolphin tours, fishing, golfing, biking, and kayaking through Jekyll Island’s many tidal creeks. It’s enough to keep any visitor busy for sure.

Jekyll Island Accommodations

Accommodations are wonderfully varied on this island, including a grand historic hotel, oceanfront hotels, beach side camping at the Jekyll Island Campground, and a brand new beachfront convention center that offers more than 78,000 square feet of function space. Within the surrounding beach village, you’ll discover other retreats such as the Westin Jekyll Island or Jekyll Island Club Hotel, which offers Victorian charm with modern conveniences in the center of the Historic District. Water lovers can even rent out a space at Jekyll Island Harbor Marina, a full-service resort marina and dry storage offering pools, hot tubs, courtesy golf carts, beach cruisers, and Wi-Fi. Visitors can even bring along a boat by trailer so that they can personally offload and launch their vessels on site.

Jekyll Island Transportation

Situated just off I-95 (Exit 29) approximately midway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida, the island is perfectly convenient for guests coming by plane or automobile. There’s the or Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and Brunswick Golden Isles Airport as well as Jekyll Island Airport for jetters, along with loads of shuttle service and car rentals options available at reduced rates through companies such as Thrifty Car or Budget.
