Indian Rocks Beach Information
About Indian Rocks Beach
Indian Rocks Beach is located on a barrier island off the west coast of Florida, with the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway by its sides. The city’s name comes from an old legend that Native Americans who lived there would visit a natural sulfur spring that had rocks surrounding it. Though there’s no spring there today, the city does have three miles of beautiful beaches that attract visitors all year long.
Things to do in Indian Rocks Beach
Indian Rocks Beach is first and foremost a beach town. There are 27 beach access points, making it easy for you to get your feet on the sand as fast as possible. Once you’ve soaked up enough Vitamin D — perhaps also journeying out on the water in a boat to fish, see dolphins or simply drive around — there are also many other activities. If you’d like to find out a little more about the city, visit the Indian Rocks Beach Historical Museum, which takes you back 100 years to the beginnings of the town. Or, try a ghost tour of John’s Pass Village one weekend night to hear tales of pirates and spirits. If you’d like to cook during your time vacationing, buy some ingredients at the Mid-Week Madeira Beach Morning Market (on Wednesdays), which has everything from produce to coffee to fudge.
Day trips from Indian Rocks Beach
Indian Rocks beach is less than an hour journey from Tampa, so if that’s not where you’re coming from head over there for an enjoyable day. Families should check out the Lowry Park Zoo with its 1,600 animals, multiple animal shows, and water play area. While there you can also check out the Florida Aquarium, visit the Tampa Bay History Center, and walk along Bayshore Boulevard, the longest continuous sidewalk in the world. If the city’s not your speed, you could also spend a day at Busch Gardens Tampa, an amusement park with rides for both little and big kids, as well as shows and fireworks. It’s only about an hour away from Indian Rocks Beach.
Indian Rocks Beach accommodations
Because Indian Rocks Beach is a relatively small and narrow city, anywhere you stay will be just about the same location wise. However, to be closest to the beach (and ideally have a great view), try to stay along the west coast of the Island. Though the east faces water as well, the Intercoastal Waterway won’t be where you’re spending your days.
Transportation in Indian Rocks Beach
Indian Rocks Beach is served by the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, which has 40 bus routes in Pinellas County. Two serve Indian Rocks Beach directly: the Suncoast Beach Trolley runs along the shore of the barrier island, while bus route 59 takes visitors to mainland Florida. Getting to Tampa will mean changing buses once and about a 1.5 hour ride. Regular fares are $2.25 each way. For getting around Indian Rocks Beach itself, your feet will usually be sufficient, but you can also rent bicycles or a car for ease.
