Day trips from Grand Lake
Although the rest of the world seems far away once you’re in the expansive mountain areas, the rest of Colorado is literally at your feet. Longs Peak is under two hours away by car, and is one of the most prominent mountains in the Rocky Mountain National Park. With a glacier and many hiking trails, the Keyhole route is most popular — a rewarding trail for experienced hikers. See the aptly named Keyhole site! Peacock Pool and Chasm Lake are popular, and more manageable trails at Longs Peak. Two and a half hours away from Grand Lake will have you arriving at Boulder. Boulder is home to the University of Colorado, Boulder, and therefore has a college town vibe. In Boulder, you can visit the Eldorado Canyon for waterfall views, or the Flatirons just outside of Boulder with Chautauqua at its feet. Chautauqua is a great picnic spot, that’s close and much less strenuous than the traditional hikes. Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby provides family fun in the summer or winter. Sliding down their summer tubing hill will chase away the heat of the warmer months, while skiing and skating opportunities will keep you warm in the winter. Plan a whitewater rafting day trip on the upper Colorado River; Grand County is a prime rafting destination for its river flows and pristine vista. Gore Canyon Whitewater Park is another option for water sports enthusiasts. Paddle boarders, kayakers and even mellow floaters will have their fill of fun against a stunning backdrop of canyons and valleys. For a bit of relaxation, Hot Sulphur Springs is an ideal retreat. Kremmling is a neighboring town that hosts an ice-fishing tournament each February at the Wolford Mountain Reservoir. It’s also close to Steamboat Ski Resort, where more than 300 miles of ski trails are heaven for cross-country skiers. During the summer, the trails are optimal for horseback riders, hikers and people who appreciate scenic drives.
