Seaside Information

About Seaside

Formerly called East Monterey, Seaside is an aptly named beach community in northern California. Bordering the Pacific Ocean, Seaside has a cool, moderate climate reminiscent of the Mediterranean. The city offers picturesque coastlines and beaches as well as numerous city parks and recreational areas. Moreover, Seaside boasts 2 prominent postsecondary institutions which include Monterey College of Law and California State University, Monterey Bay.

Things to do in Seaside

As its name suggests, Seaside has gorgeous beaches such as Seaside State Beach and Monterey State Beach. The eponymous beach is a laid-back hidden gem as it is quiet and does not frequently become overcrowded with visitors. Additionally, Seaside State Beach features sand dunes, sea glass, and sand cliffs. On the other hand, Monterey State Beach is a comparatively larger protected beach spanning from the city of Monterey to Seaside. Visitors often participate in recreational activities like paragliding and surf fishing. Seaside is home to over 20 neighborhood parks that are equipped with baseball, basketball, and tennis courts as well as designated areas for picnicking and barbecuing. A few of the popular parks include Laguna Grande Park, Highland Park, and Durant Park. For golf enthusiasts, Seaside also houses the expansive Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course which hosts professional competitions and PGA Tour events. The course is open to the public. Accordingly, since Bayonet and Black Horse is only a few minutes away from the beach, it features an impressive view of the ocean.

Day trips from Seaside

With about half an hour’s drive south of Seaside is the scenic coastal city Carmel-by-the-Sea. Carmel is known for being an artist destination because of its magnificent nature and artistic history. Carmel’s past city councilmen included actors and poets such as Perry Newberry, Clint Eastwood, and Herbert Heron. Points of interest in Carmel are an eponymous beach; whimsical cottages with architecture reminiscent of a fairytale or storybook; many art galleries and walking tours where visitors can admire local artists’ work; and Forest Theater, a historic outdoor venue for musical and theatrical performances. Big Sur is located southward from Seaside with around an hour’s drive. Big Sur is another seaside city, but it also boasts a spectacular mountain range from the Santa Lucia Mountains. With a rugged coastline, Big Sur has long stretches of stunning rustic beaches that are protected from development. Similar to Carmel, this city’s natural beauty has attracted a multitude of renowned artists and writers such as Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, and Hunter S. Thompson.

Seaside accommodations

Most vacation rentals at Seaside feature breathtaking oceanfront views. From lovely, sunny cottages to upscale villas to contemporary apartments, Seaside properties are wonderfully cozy and provide a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Tucked away from the coastline are historic, Victorian-style houses situated in friendly neighborhoods.

Transportation in Seaside

The Monterey-Salinas Transit provides limited bus transportation in Seaside with routes leading to Ryan Ranch and Sand City. However, the most convenient way to navigate through Seaside and adjacent areas is via driving a car as the city has a strong highway system that leads to neighboring towns.
