For a taste of California history, take an hour drive east from Los Angeles and into San Bernardino, CA. Not only was the original McDonald’s opened in San Bernardino, but the city was once an important trading post on the Spanish Trail in the mid-1800s. At the end of the 19th century, railroad companies like Santa Fe and Southern Pacific made San Bernardino the hub of their Southern California operations. It was an ideal location and its proximity to the San Bernardino mountains made for beautiful scenery. San Bernardino boasts over 40 parks for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. It is also home to the Empire 66ers, a Class A affiliate of the Anaheim Angels professional baseball team. With a mix of recreational activities and historical places to visit, San Bernardino has much to offer travelers.

Just a short 25-minute drive from downtown San Bernardino is Crestline, home to Lake Gregory. Crestline is considered by many as the gateway to recreational activities of the San Bernardino National Forest because it is the closest mountain resort to the cities of Southern California. Local shops and dining, as well as lake activities like boating and swimming, make the short drive to Crestline well worth it. Originally a four-day event, the Route 66 Rendezvous will once again be hosted in downtown San Bernardino this October. This classic car show began in 1990 and ran for 22 years before losing its funding in 2002. This year, the city offered to help bring back a one-day Rendezvous on October 1st. There will be food vendors, activities for kids, two beer gardens, and hundreds of custom and classic cars to see. If you’re a fast food fanatic, you’ll want to stop by the McDonald’s museum located at 1398 N E St. in San Bernardino. The museum marks the site of the nation’s first McDonald’s. Visitors can see antique happy meal toys, memorabilia, and take a few minutes for some neat photos. The museum is free to visit. California State University San Bernardino is a 15-minute drive from downtown San Bernardino. The university was named a 2014 Best College in the Western Region by Princeton Review and its division II athletic teams compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Head over to campus and watch the women’s volleyball team try for their 7th CCAA title.

Less than an hour away lies Mount San Antonio, referred to by many as Mt. Baldy, the highest peak of the San Gabriel Mountains. It also takes the position as the highest point in Los Angeles County, California. A National Forest adventure pass is required if parking at many of the trailheads and can be purchased for $5 at any Big 5 Sporting Goods store or the Mt. San Antonio Ranger Station. An hour’s drive northeast will take you to Big Bear Lake, a great place to go on hikes, bike around the 23-mile shoreline of the lake, or hit the downtown area for dining and shopping. Recreational activities are available year-round and range from parasailing and jet skiing to snow skiing and tubing. Every year, the annual Oktoberfest draws in a crowd to experience brats, beers and dancing.
