Prescott Information

About Prescott

One of Arizona’s most beautiful historic destinations, Prescott is nestled at an elevation of 5,200 feet above sea level and is located amidst Prescott National Forest - one of the largest ponderosa pine forests in the country. Prescott was founded in 1863 and was Arizona’s first territorial capital. With a perfect average temperature of 70 degrees, a climate that experiences all four seasons, and gorgeous landscapes of lakes, streams, mountains and meadows, Prescott is an ideal location to plan your next vacation adventure.

Things to Do in Prescott

To experience Arizona’s rich ranching history, start at the Courthouse Plaza – the focal point of old Prescott, which is surrounded by historic downtown buildings. Whiskey Row features several of the 50 saloons that previously lined Montezuma Street, while the rest of the salons have been replaced by art galleries and boutiques. Be sure to stop in Van Gogh’s Ear on Montezuma Street, a fine art gallery that features a variety of art including sculptures, jewelry, mixed media, glass, and textiles. Rent a bike and go for a day ride around Peavine Trail, which goes through the beautiful boulders of Granite Dells, then stop for lunch at the Prescott Brewery, a local tavern that serves house-brewed beers and pub grub. Other great points of interest in Prescott include the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary, a visit to Sharlot Hall Museum (the restored governor’s home with folk art), and fishing fishing at Lynx Lake, a popular spot for outdoor recreation and camping.

Prescott Day Trips

A day trip worth your time is the Out of Africa Wildlife Park located in Camp Verde, approximately an hour from Prescott. The park is open daily from 9:30am to 5pm, and includes a giant snake show, tiger observation, a 40-minute narrated African Bush Safari, and a wildlife preserve that can be explored by foot or via park vehicles. If you’re up for the two-hour drive, you can spend a day in Scottsdale, which is home to many art galleries in its Old Town District, as well as shopping. The Grand Canyon National Park, which is one of the oldest national parks in the United States, is also a two-hour drive from Prescott but is worth the trip. There are many ways to experience the Grand Canyon, which include a stop at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, hiking the Rim Trail, taking a South Rim mule trip, and touring the scenic Hermit Road. The nearby town of Guadalupe is a Native American and Hispanic community between Tempe and Phoenix is a great place to buy unique Mexican goods and stop for lunch during a half-day trip; try the Mexican seafood at the San Diego Bay Restaurant located in El Tianguis, a court-yard shopping center.

American Ranch is one of the most desirable areas of homes in Prescott, located at the base of Granite Mountain and adjacent to Prescott National Forest with access to equestrian trails, a fishing lake, tennis and sports courts. Other popular neighborhoods include Hassayampa Village, a private gated golf community that overlooks Prescott and features forest and creek views, as well as High Valley Ranch, a planned mountain neighborhood that is located in the forest but is just minutes from town with multi-acre homes surrounded by wildlife.
