Things to do in Jasper
Enjoy the arts and culture scene while you’re in town by heading to Bankhead House and Heritage Center. This restored home of former Congressman William B. Bankhead hosts rotating art exhibits and admission is free. It’s open Tuesday through Friday and the third Saturday of the month. The Walker County Arts Alliance is a great resource for all things arts, culture, and community events in Jasper. Stroll around town and check out the more than 50 mule statues that have been constructed and painted by locals to depict the rich history of the town. If you’re visiting Jasper in September, you’ll be just in time for the Foothills Festival. This weekend-long, free festival features live music from Grammy-nominated artists and local musicians, a rock climbing wall, a petting zoo, and so much more. The festival takes place in the historic Courthouse Square in downtown Jasper and usually draws a crowd of more than 12,000 folks. The Courthouse Square is also a beautiful place to come and look at the architecture of the old building and take in the scenery surrounding the quaint square. In the Spring, you’ll get a chance to attend the Art in the Park festival. Here, you can stroll through the event and explore local artwork, enjoy live music and dancing, and grab a bite to eat. Spend the day out on the rolling greens at Horse Creek Golf Course. Take a short, 15-minute drive out to the course and play 18-holes on this reclaimed strip mine. The course includes trees, water hazards, and more challenges for the avid golfer. It’s a par 72, so be sure to bring your A-game! The course is open to the public and a round of 18 holes is just $29 on weekdays and $39 on weekends. Check out Bear Branch Golf Club for a shorter day of golfing. This nine-hole course features some trees, water, and 3,095 yards of golf. Curry Golf Course is another nine-hole course that was designed by Charlie Walker and opened in 1999. Riverbend Golf Course is the last public golf course in Jasper. It spans more than 6.500 yards and has narrow fairways and challenging water hazards. You’ll have many golfing options in Jasper, so don’t forget your clubs!
Day Trips from Jasper
Take a quick 20-minute drive and make a day trip to Dora, Alabama to check out the Alabama Mining Museum. Housed in an old gymnasium and built by the Federal Works Project Administration in 1935, this museum features artifact from the mining industry during the 1890s to 1940s. If you’d rather hit up a bigger city on your day trip, head to Birmingham. Drive 40-minutes southeast of Jasper and arrive in Birmingham with a full day ahead of you. Head to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and take a tour of this museum that portrays the civil rights movement in an accurate and reflective way. Interactive exhibits, multimedia effects, and much more will guide you as you make your way through this informative museum. The McWane Science Center is another great place to take the kids and let them explore four floors of hands-on activities, the dinosaur exhibit, and an IMAX theater that will make you feel like you’re in the movie. For a truly unique experience, check out the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. This living museum of classic cars and motorbikes collected by George Barber. In 2014, the museum was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s largest motorcycle collection.
