Nerja Information

About Nerja

Located along southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, Nerja is a stunning resort town with miles of sandy beaches, cliffside coves, and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. From beautiful beaches and golf courses to world-class entertainment and an exciting nightlife, Nerja is the ideal place to visit when you’re looking for rest and relaxation in a Spanish paradise.

Things to Do in Nerja

Balcon de Europa (Balcony of Europe) was previously a fortress to keep out pirates and invaders, and according to legend, King Alfonso XII named it in the 1800s. Nowadays it is the central point of the town and offers stunning views of the coast. Many concerts and parties are hosted in this spot, as well as the annual New Year celebration with fireworks and music. Another must-see is the weekly Tuesday Market, which has a wide range of stalls offering everything from clothing and leather goods to fruit and vegetables. The market is located at the end of Calle Cisne and is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Take a deeper look at the town’s special history by visiting the Nerja Caves, which were discovered in 1959 and house paintings on the walls that are rumored to be 20,000 years old. If you’re looking to partake in the exciting Nerja nightlife, head down to Plaza Tutti Frutti, which is the main center of activity and where most of the bar, restaurants and clubs are located. El Salvador Church is located near the Balcony of Europe, and is a beautiful 17th Century building in the baroque-mudejar style. Nerja is known for its stunning and endless beaches, which include Calahonda Beach, Carebeo Beach, Burriana Beach, Torrecilla Beach and more. Each one has its own unique style and vibe, but they all offer unobstructed views. Take diving lessons at Nerja Dive Resort, take a cooking lesson at Sticky Fingers Cookery School, or go on a Jeep Tour of Nerja, which is a great way to explore the Sierra Almijara and learn all about the diverse flora and fauna in the area.

Day Trips Near Nerja

The Alhambra Palace Granada, former royal residence of the founder of the Nazari Dynasty, is located at the food of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and overlooks the city of Granada, which is just over an hour north of Nerja. The beautiful port city of Malaga is an hour west of Nerja, and is where many resorts and hotels are located, in addition to the cathedral La Manquita. Maro is a cute beach village that is less than two miles away from Nerja, which can be a fun and scenic walk if you’re up for it.

Nerja Accommodation

There are a variety of villas and apartments available to rent in various parts of town. Capistrano Village is a nice area with beautiful gardens and lots of parking. It is slightly further from town, which makes it a bit quieter and peaceful. Many nice apartments are located in the Burriana Beach area, offering nice views of the ocean. Verano Azul is another nice area that is a close walk into town with plenty of apartments.

Transportation in Nerja

Aside from walking, which is the best way to get around Nerja, there is plenty of public transportation as well. Nerja has a small bus station located at the top eastern end of town near Plaza Cantarero (aka Orange Square), and is run by the bus company Alsa. Tickets for rides to towns including Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, and Almunecar can be purchased here. Another bus known as the Frigiliana stops here as well (taking passengers to the town of Frigiliana), and tickets can be directly purchased from the bus driver. The popular Nerja Tourist Train is another fun way to get around town, departing from Plaza Cavana daily—you won’t be able to miss its bright blue color. Taxis are also abundant in Nerja, with various stands located throughout town.
