About Guaymas

Located in northwestern Mexico, in the state of Sonora, Guaymas is known for its scenic beauty and historical buildings. San Carlos, a beachfront area within the city of Guaymas is a tourist hotspot, as is the “Aquarium of the World” or the Gulf of California. The city is the main port of the state of Sonora and is located just 242 miles from the U.S. border. Being a coastal city, fishing is highly important to the people, with the profession employing 80% of the population. Get ready for some great seafood, beautiful views of the gulf, and maybe even an up close encounter with some marine life!

The Carnival of Guaymas, one of the oldest carnivals in the country, is held every year on the day before Ash Wednesday (a Catholic religious holiday), and ends at the stroke of midnight on the beginning of Lent, a time of abstinence and reflection for Catholics. This festival includes multiple day-long parades throughout the city, carnival rides, arts and entertainment. The colorful floats in the parade are a sight to see, so don’t forget to check out this historical carnival and celebrate like the locals. The Gulf of California is known to many in Guaymas as “The Aquarium of the World”, but why? Well, oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau coined the expression because of the amazing biodiversity that is found in it. To explain further, the gulf is home to 40% of the mammal species in the world and includes houses the largest variety of whales and dolphins on the planet. Imagine, then, what you would see scuba diving in this region! To top t off, the water temperature during summer months can reach a tropical 80 degrees or more. Companies in Guaymas and the neighborhood of San Carlos provide visitors with scuba diving lessons, instruction, and equipment. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see fish and mammals that are unique to the region. Playa de los Algodones Beach has sand dunes and is a popular place for water sports, while Playa San Francisco Beach is the largest and most visited beach. Tourists and locals come here for the calm waves and proximity to Guaymas. Playa Piedras Pintas Beach is another great place to relax, and also a perfect beach for snorkeling and scuba diving. Finally, the historical sites are not to be missed on your vacation. San Fernando Church dates back to the 19th Century when it was dedicated to the king of Spain.
