Cozumel Information

About Cozumel

Cozumel is the most inhabited Mexican island in the Caribbean. The beautiful island is just off of the Yucatan Peninsula in the southeast of Mexico. The island is characterized by its beautiful beaches, friendly residents, and safe streets. Cozumel is an important tourist destination for the country of Mexico, therefore there are plenty of ways for visitors to reach the island. Several U.S. cities offer direct flights to the island and all offer flights to Cozumel’s closest neighbor, Cancun. Visitors can also opt for ferries from mainland Mexico.

Things To Do In Cozumel

Most visitors find themselves in Cozumel as part of a day trip from Cancun and are there to dive and see the beautiful underwater life the Cozumel is known for. There are a plethora of beach clubs that offer snorkeling, the island’s main attractions are the reefs offshore and the multiple dive shops. Cozumel’s main town is San Miguel and it is on the west side of the island. Here, visitors will be able to eat and shop. The east side of the island is largely underdeveloped but there are beautiful beaches that visitors can see if they rent a bike or scooter. The island also has several Mayan archaeological sites at San Gervaiso which is an inland site a few miles north of the main highway. The real highlight of Cozumel though is scuba diving as it is one of the premier scuba diving destinations in the Western Hemisphere. Most of the diving in Cozumel is drift diving, where visitors are dropped off by a boat at the beginning of the dive, carried along the reef by the current, and picked up at the end of the dive. The more notable diving companies include Aldora Divers, Aqua Safari, Bottom Time Drivers, Deep Blue, and Buena Ventura Diving.

Day Trips From Cozumel

A ferry takes visitors to mainland Mexico within twenty minutes. Visitors can visit Cancun which has a great deal of things to see and activities to get into including world class museums, aquariums as well as a great dining options. Playa del Carmen like Cozumel is a great destination for scuba diving and has tasty food and great culture. Isla Mujeres is a tiny island on the Caribbean that offers for great snorkeling and water activities. Tulum, is an ancient city (once an important Mayan city) which consists of breathtaking stone temples perched atop a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. There is also a great beach nestled at the bottom of the cliff in Tulum.

Cozumel Accommodations

Cozumel has a variety of accommodation establishments including hotels, motels, bed and breakfast establishments, as well as vacation rentals. The majority of the accommodations are on the west side of the island.

Transportation In Cozumel

Due to it being a small island, traffic is non-existent on Cozumel so visitors can walk, rent a vehicle, or hail taxis to get around. Renting a vehicle is a great option for visitors who would enjoy visiting the east side of the island which has untouched waters and sand.
