Guadalajara Information

About Guadalajara

The capital city of Jalisco, Guadalajara is known for its tequila and mariachi music. If you’re visiting, though, you’ll find much more than that. The second largest city in Mexico, Guadalajara boasts natural parks, neoclassical landmarks, and historic plazas that draw visitors to its streets year-round. Take a trip to this capital city and get a feel for the Mexican culture and heritage that has made the country such a beloved vacation destination.

Things to do in Guadalajara

La Barranca de Huentitán, also called Barranca de Oblatos, is a beautiful natural park in Guadalajara. It boasts some of the most challenging hikes in the state and is home to four different types of vegetation. Here, you can see examples of Tropical Forests, Deciduous, Riparian, and Rupicolous Gerbil vegetation. The area is protected by the World Conservation Union and offers visitors views at Great Horned Owls, Collared Peccaries, Bobcats, and even Vampire Bats. Check out the incredible view of the canyon from atop the hiking trails, especially during the rainy season when the vegetation is full of life. The city center in Guadalajara is one of the best places to go if you really want to submerse yourself in the city’s culture. The center has four plazas you can stroll through and features some beautiful neoclassical architecture, especially Teatro Degollado. Ballets and musical events are often held here, but the building itself is beautiful to look at, as well. In addition, the Instituto Cultural Cabanas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is another great place to see neoclassical design. Head to San Juan de Dios and pick up a bite to eat or a souvenir to take home. This three-story market has just about any item you’re looking for, and at a reasonable price. If you’d rather, grab a bench in one of the four plazas and enjoy the sunshine as you people watch and take in the sights surrounding you.

Day Trips from Guadalajara

If you’re ready to view Mexico’s largest freshwater lake, then make the one-hour drive to Lake Chapala for a day trip. This lake is fed by the Río Lerma, Río Zula, Río Huaracha, and Río Duero rivers and contains three small islands. Guadalajara has relied on Lake Chapala as its source of water for over 50 years. In addition, many species of migratory birds call this lake home, 173 of them to be exact, including the American White Pelican. Along the lake’s waterfront are many different villages with distinct personalities, and the weather is nearly always Spring-like. This is a perfect place to come and unwind and enjoy some natural scenery before heading back to the hustle and bustle of Guadalajara.

Transportation in Guadalajara

Getting to Guadalajara from outside of Mexico is easy; just book a flight into Guadalajara International Airport. It’s located a short 10 miles outside of the city center and is one of Mexico’s top three busiest airports, just after Mexico City and Cancun International Airports. Reach your accommodations via taxi, bus, or shuttle. While you’re on vacation, use the bus as much as possible, as it is the cheapest option and has many convenient routes to city attractions. Or, if you’re feeling fancy, try a horse-drawn carriage ride and get around in style. Finally, walking is another great option, as you’ll be able to take in the sights at your leisure and control when and where you want to stop.
