Manzanillo Information

About Manzanillo

Manzanillo is a port city and resort town located along the Pacific Ocean in Mexico, and it is also where two bays are located (the Bay of Manzanillo and the Bay of Santiago). In addition to beautiful beaches and tame waters that host numerous water sports and activities, the waters off the coast of Manzanillo are home to various shipwrecks, coral reefs, and famous dive sites. Many people also come here to partake in the deep-sea sports fishing, particularly for marlin.

Things to Do in Manzanillo

When spending time in downtown Manzanillo, many people like to go for a stroll along the mile-long boardwalk, which offers harbor views and has pretty statues and trees along the way. In the downtown area, the town square is a garden known as Jardin, and this is where the town gathers. You’ll also be inclined to catch different music groups performing here spontaneously while people dance. Just off the town square is Av. Mexico, which is where all the tourist shops are located, along with numerous restaurants, particularly those serving seafood. There is also a market that sells all kinds of fresh foods and other goods like piñatas, and this is located on Av. Francisco I. Madero. When visiting the Hotel Zone, this is where all the major hotels and restaurants are located and has been renovated with lots of nice benches and trees for those who need to take a break from their walk. Go sport fishing on one of the many boats that are available to take tourists out in the water, and take a photo next to the largest sailfish statue which is located in the town.

Day Trips Near Manzanillo

There are two towns located about an hour and a half inland from Manzanillo that both make for great day trips. Colima is a beautiful city and is where the Basilica Menor cathedral is located, along with various historical government buildings, including one that houses multiple paintings by local artist Jorge Chavez Carrillo. There is also a great shopping scene nearby, and if you drive to nearby Colima Volcano, you’ll find an area known as Zona Magica. Here, cars and water provide the optical illusion of rolling upwards rather than downwards, and entrance is free. The other town nearby worth paying a visit to is Colima, which is located a few miles down the road and is painted entirely white, while its streets are paved in river rock. The town offers great views of Colima Volcano in the distance, which is active again and sometimes you can see smoke coming out of the top.

Manzanillo Accommodation

There are two different sections or parts of Manzanillo, one is El Centro and refers to the downtown area, and the other is Zona Hotelera and is the hotel zone. The Santiago Peninsula, which is located west of Avenida Audiencia and across the golf course, is one of the nicer parts of town to stay in. Here you’ll find more upscale homes and condos for rent. Located at the end of the peninsula is the exclusive gated community of La Punta, which is the most affluent neighborhood in Manzanillo and is where million-dollar homes are located. Another nice place to stay is the Juluapan Peninsula, which has several scenic developments that offer views of the water and Santiago Bay, and housing is more spread out here offering space and quiet to guests and residents.

Transportation in Manzanillo

In addition to several car rental companies, there is also a simple bus system in Manzanillo that typically comes every 10 minutes and takes guests throughout the town. Taxis are also abundant, although it is recommended that one ask the price before getting in. Lastly, walking is another great way to get around when you’re traveling shorter distances.
