With a population of 250,000, Campeche is the largest city and capital in the state of Campeche, Mexico. Things to Do in Campeche
One recommended activity is to go for a walk along the Malecon, which is a paved path located along the sea wall that faces the Gulf of Mexico. This three-mile stretch takes you within close distance of most of the main attractions, and halfway down it you are within a few blocks of the town center. Go shopping at the central market, as well as at the various vendor stalls located outside. Campeche is famous for its seafood, and there are many restaurants located in the historic center here you can stop and have a bite. The Baluarte de Santiago was built in the 18th Century and is home to a beautiful botanical garden, while the Baluarte San Francisco offers panoramic city views from the roof of the bastion. Catch a cool light and sound show that tells the tales of pirates and other sea wars at the Puerta del Tierra, and stop by the museum at Baluarte de La Soledad, a 17th-century building. Enjoy Moorish decoration as seen on the 17th-century Carvajal Mansion, and observe Campeche handicrafts at La Casa de las Artesanias Tukulna, which is a beautiful remodeled antique house. If you happen to be in town on February 2, Campeche hosts a Feast of Candelaria, a carnival celebration that honors Our Lady of El Carmen later in the month, the San Roman Fair during the last two week of September, and a celebration that honors the founding of the city of Campeche in the first half of October.
