About Pisa
The charming Tuscan city of Pisa, right by the River Arno, is known best for its leaning tower. The city is littered with historical and beautiful sites. Things to do in Pisa
The Leaning Tower is sure to be your first stop in Pisa, where you can take that classic perspective photo — trying to “hold it up” from afar. The tower is over 700 years old, and its iconic tilt draws thousands of visitors. Book in advance to climb the tower and avoid the wait. Pisa’s beautiful Romanesque Duomo is even older, with free entrance and a long history — once the largest in Europe. Head to the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, where you can find sculptures by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. The Museo Nazionale di San Matteo is a must-see, where you can find works by Pisano again, and Simone Martini. The Battistero, a round baptistry is another beautiful site, and legend has it that this is where Galileo came up with the laws of the pendulum. The dome has incredible echo effects, so don’t forget to climb up to the Upper Gallery.
Day trips from Pisa
Florence is one hour away, and the capital of the Tuscany region. One of the most enlightening trips you could take, visiting Florence will fill you with history and beautiful art. See the Florence Cathedral in its medieval style. The Uffizi Gallery is packed with Renaissance art, featuring works by Botticelli, da Vinci, Raphael, Titian and Michelangelo. See the Ponte Vecchio medieval bridge, and head to the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David.
