Kenora Information

About Kenora

Known for its vast wilderness and countless beaches on the shores of Lake of the Woods, Kenora, Ontario is an ideal getaway for the city-slicker. The city is small and close to the Manitoba boundary. In its history, Kenora has been a place of gold discovery and was once one of the towns that the Canadian Pacific Railway passed through. A true getaway location, Kenora also served as a smuggler’s route for the transportation of alcohol during the Prohibition era in the U.S. There’s always somewhere to explore in this historically rich city, so pack your bags and get ready for all that Kenora has to offer.

Things to do in Kenora

Head out to Lake of the Woods for a beautiful day in the sun. This lake is over 70 miles both long and wide, and contains more than 14,500 islands along with 65,000 miles of shoreline. It is partially located in Minnesota, and so it’s technically the sixth largest freshwater lake in the U.S. right after the Great Lakes. Check out Coney Island Beach, where a playground, public beaches, concession stands, and picnic areas await. Rent a canoe or paddleboard and cruise around the water. Or, bring a beach towel and lay out on Keewatin Beach for a relaxing day in the sun. If you like to get out and explore the area on your vacations, Kenora has a trail for that. The Rat Portage Urban Trail mixes city sidewalks with wilderness, as it winds through the city past the shops and restaurants and gives visitors a view of the art murals and harbor front. If you’re more interested in a real hiking adventure, try the Kenora Nordic Trails. Mt. Evergreen Ski Hill. The Nordic Trails are a series of trails that weave though forests and rocky ridges, offering hikers incredible views of Lake of the Woods.

They’ll love Great Big Adventure, Winnipeg’s largest indoor play structure featuring seven 20-foot slides, among other things. This is a great idea for those cold blistery winter days when your kids are craving some activity. There’s always Assiniboine Park Zoo where you can visit the Journey to Churchill exhibit and get a close up look polar bears and arctic fox in this northern species exhibit.
