About Collingwood

At the southern point of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada is where you’ll find Collingwood. It was originally inhabited by the Iroquoian Petun nation but was taken over by European and freed black slaves when they arrived in the 1840s. the town of Collingwood was established in 1858 and began its economic boom when the Northern Railway came through the town and it became a shipment point for U.S.–bound goods. Things to do in Collingwood

The Georgian Trail, an old railway line that has been converted to a hiking and biking trail, begins and ends in Collingwood. The beautiful, mostly wooded, cycling path gives visitors a chance to explore the surrounding areas by bike. Take a ride along the coast and stop in Thornbury, a cute, seaside town complete with antique shops and artisan studios. You can also choose to walk the trail on a pleasant day and stop at Council Beach for a little R&R. The trail stretches for some 20 miles, reaching all the way up to Meaford. Enjoy the scenic views with easy access to the cities along the trail. If you’ve ever wanted to zipline, Collingwood is the perfect place to do it. At 2,550 feet in length and a vertical drop of 287 feet, The Thunderbird Twin Zipline is Canada’s longest twin zip line. You can ride side-by-side to your friend or loved one and experience the joy of ziplining together. You might even reach speeds up to 37 mph! One of the most unique features to this zipline doesn’t have to do with the speed or length of the ride, but the fact that it’s located within a UNESCO biosphere. You’re guaranteed beautiful views of treetops and 200-year-old forests and, on clear days, you can even see the islands in Georgian Bay. If speeding through the UNESCO biosphere at high speeds isn’t your idea of a fun time, you could always take leisurely stroll through it. Situated at the highest point of the Niagara Escarpment is Scenic Caves Nature Adventures. Walk by Trout Pond or picnic in the woods. Go on a cave tour or walk across a suspension bridge. You can even go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on the nature trails and suspension bridge in the winter. You’ll have plenty of options with varying levels of adventure, so be sure to check out this place.

Day Trips from Collingwood

The Blue Mountains area lies just 10 miles to the north of Collingwood, making it an easy day trip without the hassle of driving long distances. In the winter, this is the place to go. Blue Mountain Ski Resort has trails for all types of skiers and snowboarders. The beginner terrain is best for kids and adults learning how to ski/snowboard for the first time, while the terrain park is meant for snow bunnies looking to hit the jumps. You can even go night skiing or ski through the glades, weaving in and out of the trees of Central Ontario. In the warmer months, the city hosts events like the Apple Harvest Festival and Community Day. On a nice, sunny day head to Firehall Pizza Co. where you can enjoy your food outside on their patio. Kaytoo is an awesome place to have a drink on the waterfront and take in the fresh air. The town also has a handful of spas so you can get some relaxation in before heading back to Collingwood.
