About Shediac

Shediac, a small town in New Brunswick, is known as the Lobster Capital of the World. 6,000 people live on this town situated on a bay in Eastern Canada. Though the town was incorporated in 1903, it has a rich history dating back hundreds of years. Today, people visit for the annual Lobster Festival, warm water, the artsy downtown area. There is a 90-ton sculpture of a lobster that is nicknamed “The World’s Largest Lobster,” though it may not actually be the largest lobster sculpture in existence.

Things to do in Shediac

There are many opportunities for outdoor recreation in Shediac. The water can reach 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius), allowing visitors to swim or kayak in the pristine saltwater. Parlee Beach Provincial Park is a beautifully maintained beach that is usually free of tourists. There are also several golf courses and hiking trails nearby. Visitors of the Lobster Capital of the World have to try Shediac’s variety of seafood restaurants. La Coast Restaurant et Bar features well-prepared dishes and friendly, multilingual service. For something other than lobster, visit Chez Leo Fried Clams, which is famous for its namesake dish. Shediac is also a wonderful shopping destination. Downtown features the Corridor of Lights, and the Artist Village has many boutiques, galleries, and artisans’ shops. If you’re visiting in the summer, be sure to stop by the Sunday Market, which offers arts and crafts, local food, and produce.

Day Trips from Shediac

An hour and a half away, via the Trans-Canada highway, Prince Edward Island is a province marked with red-sand beaches, rolling green hills, and lighthouses. Prince Edward Island is known for its local cuisine, featuring fresh seafood. In Charlottesville, the capital, visitors can go to the horse racing track and be “owners for a day,” where you discuss strategy, enjoy dinner, and then watch your horse race. Saint John, the largest city in New Brunswick, is an hour and forty-five minutes from Shediac. From Saint John, take a short trip to nearby St. Martins, the home of the Fundy Trail Parkway. This scenic drive is perfect for bicyclists, hikers, and vehicle-driving visitors who want to take in the beaches, waterfalls, and rugged coastline. To see a diverse ecosystem with many birds and sea animals, drive an hour up the coast to Kouchibouguac National Park. These sensitive sand dunes are home to several rare and endangered species, such as the Piping Plover – a small bird, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence Aster – an extremely rare flowering plant. Go on a river adventure in a canoe and look out for seals!
