Osoyoos Information

About Osoyoos

Established as a customs point on the Canada-US border, Osoyoos is now known for much more than that. This small resort town of just over 4,500 is packed with wine tasting, skiing, and aboriginal experiences. At the center of town in Osoyoos, British Columbia lies Lake Osoyoos, another recreational hot spot. You’d be hard pressed to visit this town and not find something that interests you.

Things to do in Osoyoos

Take a trip to Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Center and you’ll get a chance to learn all about the Aboriginal people who have lived on Osoyoos’ land for thousands of years. Today, around 450 members of the Osoyoos Indian Band live on the Osoyoos Indian Reserve, and have contributed their culture and heritage to the city itself. The Cultural Center boasts indoor and outdoor cultural and nature exhibits and the surrounding desert provides visitors a close-up view of the ecosystem that is so sacred to the desert dwellers. Osoyoos is a wine-lover’s paradise. The city and its surrounding areas offer 44 different wineries and many of their vineyards dot the Osoyoos countryside. NK’Mip Cellars is North America’s first aboriginal owned and operated winery. It overlooks the shores of Osoyoos Lake and offers tastings and food options to be enjoyed on their patio. You can also take a tour of their winery. Lastella Winery is another Osooyoos winery, and its tasting room features Venetian hand blown light fixtures, antique furniture, and some of the best wine in British Columbia. Moon Curser Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery in Osoyoos. Their unique winery plays off of the prohibition-smuggling bandits that once traveled through Osoyoos, calling their own wine contraband and creating an intriguing atmosphere you’ll want to see for yourself! For some outdoor adventure time, try hiking Mount Kobau. The summit of the mountain is a whopping 6,135 feet, and a steep trail that takes you there houses an abandoned forestry lookout tower. For a more leisurely outdoor hike, head to Haynes Point Provincial Park. This popular park has a 1-mile gravel and boardwalk trail that winds through the wetlands, offering hikers excellent views of birds and the wetland habitat. For a nice and easy stroll, you can take in the sights along Main Street via Pioneer Walkway. Here, you’ll find gardens, picnic tables, and ample space to lounge and relax.

Day Trips from Osoyoos

Just under 2 hours north of Osoyoos is Kelowna, a beautiful town nestled up next to the shores of Okanagan Lake. The picturesque views in Kelowna are reason enough to visit, but the city really has a lot to offer. If you have a full day in Kelowna, start your adventures with a trip to Myra Canyon. Rent a bike and ride along this historical landmark that offers breathtaking views of the scenery below. You’ll be impressed by the steep-walled canyon which features 2 tunnels and 18 trestle bridges. You can also hike this or get a guided tour by Monashee Adventure Tours. The farm-to-table movement is going strong in Kelowna, so stop by Bonfire Restaurant where you can eat your food outside on the patio which offers a gorgeous view of Okanagan Lake. Or, you can stop by East Kelowna Cider Company where you can take a tour of their family-owned farm and taste a few hard ciders. Don’t forget that since you’re right on the shores of 84-mile long Okanagan Lake, you’ll have prime access to the water. Rent a boat, jet skis, a sailboat, kayaks, canoes, and almost any other water activity equipment you can think of to enjoy all the lake has to offer.

Osoyoos Accommodations

Tripping.com provides access to over 180 vacation rentals in the Osoyoos region. From lakefront homes with spectacular views to a quaint bed and breakfast in the heart of Osoyoos wine country. Here, you’ll get the best of both worlds, with a great view of the lake and vineyards, but close enough to visit a couple wineries without having to go very far. Tripping.com even offers over 40 rentals with hot tubs so you can sit and relax after a long day of traveling.

Transportation in Osoyoos

Taking a flight to Vancouver and then a second flight to Osoyoos Regional airport is the best way to reach Osoyoos from out of the area. From the airport, it’s just a few minutes to the heart of the town, so you can rent a shuttle, cab, or rent your own car to have the freedom to travel around while in Osoyoos. The South Okanagan Transit System does run a bus from Osoyoos to Kelowna, so you could take that to and from your day trip destination. Check their website for fares. A car is not necessarily needed in Osoyoos, but if you want to explore the wineries, desert, and other attractions that the bus system does not service, a rental car is best.
