Things to Know Before Jetting Off to Visit the Big Apple

New York is a fantastic and very popular tourist destination. People flock from all around the US and the rest of the world to see the wonders that the city has to behold. Whether you already have your heart set on a visit to New York or are still weighing up your options, there are a few things worth knowing about the Big Apple.

The Dangers of the City

It is widely publicized that New York is a dangerous city to be in, and if popular culture is to be believed you would expect everyone to walk around wielding guns and other weapons. This simply isn't true. New York is in fact one of the safest tourist destinations in the world. There are so many people constantly milling around that it would be close to impossible to commit a crime without being caught. Just like any major city there are some areas that are less safe than others but if you stick to the well populated, tourist zones you should have no trouble at all.

The People

It is a common misconception that everyone in New York is rude. The fact is that the city is one of the busiest in the world so the chances are that the majority of people you come across will be working or on their way to do something. If you do manage to slow them down and talk to them though, you may find that New Yorkers are some of the friendliest people in the world. It's also worth taking into account that many people you encounter in New York may well be tourists just like you.

Things to Do

New York city probably has more tourist attractions and things to do than any other place in the world. The Statue of Liberty is a must see and the views from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building are phenomenal. Arrive as early as possible at these sorts of attractions though, because you certainly won't be the only people there! Don't forget to stop by Times Square, it really does look like it does in the movies.

On a sunny day, Central Park is the place to be. It's even bigger than it looks so one of the best ways to get around is to hire a bike. The recently opened 9/11 memorial provides a place of quiet contemplation and remembrance for the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy.

Just Enjoy Yourself
