Newport News, located on the southeastern end of the Virginia peninsula, is just off the coast of the James River. It may be one of the oldest documented places in the New World, after the Jamestown landing in 1607. Since then, Newport News has set the scene for a lot of America’s history including the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and the Peninsula Campaign. It’s a place that brings history back to life, with a tourist appeal that extends beyond its natural beauty.

Newport News has tons of sites where visitors can learn about the nation’s beginning. The Mariners’ Museum, Fort Eustis and Virginia War Museum are home to extensive artifacts and collections from America’s past. There’s a historic C&O railroad station and a number of American Civil War Battle sites near Lee Hall towards the city’s west end. There are also 19th century plantations that have been protected and preserved through the ages. The Virginia Living Museum is an outdoor living museum where visitors can see wildlife and visit the aquarium and botanical preserve. Newport News also has a number of scenic parks where visitors can hike, camp, fish and canoe. Newport News Park, the largest of 32 city-parks maintained by Newport News Parks, is the second largest city-park in the United States.
