Clifton Forge is a town of 3,000 in the Roanoke Region of Virginia. The town has a rich history as a railroad town, beginning with the first passenger train in 1857. That tradition continues today with Amtrak’s thrice-weekly service. Clifton Forge also enjoys a variety of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Its proximity to Allegheny Highlands, a temperate forest region near the Shenandoah Valley, make it a top destination for those seeking adventure or relaxation on their vacation.

Things to do in Clifton Forge

Douthat State Park, located in Clifton Forge, was one of the original state parks in Virginia. It was built during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Today, it is a popular attraction for camping, hiking, fishing, boating, and more. Enjoy the park’s 4,500 acres of nature all year long. After a day of outdoor recreation, stop for dinner at the Douthat Lake View Restaurant. History enthusiasts will love the C & O Railway Heritage Center. There is a small museum on site, which features model trains and restored rail cars. Visitors can actually explore the dining car, baggage car, and caboose by walking through them. Kids will enjoy taking a ride on the small model train. The staff, known for being very friendly, can answer any questions that you have about the rail cars and the town’s railroad history! In nearby Buchanan, visitors can go to Twin River Outfitters, which rents out a variety of paddle sports rentals. Try tubing down the Upper James or kayaking on the Maury River. An hour and a half away, Lynchburg is a historic city enjoying an economic renaissance. The vibrant downtown scene features delicious dining alongside stately red brick buildings. For an easy hike, try the 1.2-mile stroll on Fox Hollow Trail. Out of town visitors may be inclined to take the three-and-a-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. Here, visitors can see some of the most significant landmarks in our nation’s political system. However, for those looking to get off the beaten path, stop at the United States Botanic Garden, which often gets passed by tourists. For dinner, stop at Restaurant Nora, which is the United States’ first certified organic restaurant.
