Wells Information
About Wells
Hugging the Vermont-New York state border, Wells is a small town of just about 1,000. Its picturesque natural surroundings include two lakes, the Green Mountains off in the background, and jaw-dropping foliage in the autumn. With very little in the way of shopping, activities, and shops, Wells is a fantastic place for a peaceful getaway. The town takes up just 23.4 square miles, and is within driving distance of some of the best ski and snowboard areas in the New England area.
Things to do in Wells
One of the only options in Wells for food and drink happens to be the most amazing little store coincidentally called Wells Country Store. This is the place to go in town for a sandwich, baked goods, or even to fill up a growler of draft, craft beer to take home. Their pies and apple cider donuts are always crowd pleasers, and the breakfast muffins go great with the freshly brewed coffee they sell. On a crisp fall day, it is definitely worth it to stop in at this quintessential Vermont country store before heading out to see the foliage. Wellsmere Farm, a family-owned and operated working farm in Wells, is a fun place to go for a trip to pet some animals. The place has pigs, goats, cows, and horses that you can pet. Vegetables are the main commodity produced and sold on the farm, and there are also pumpkins for purchase during the fall months. Take a drive down to Wellsmere Farm and explore the beautiful surroundings while you’re there. Perhaps the biggest allure of Wells is its lakes. Little Lake and a southern portion Lake Saint Catherine are both located in Wells, and are perfect places to get some R&R in. Lake Saint Catherine also offers free public access to fishing and swimming. If you’re coming to Wells to get away from all the noise, set up a beach chair or blanket at one of these lakes and you’ll be in an idyllic setting where you’ll be able to close your eyes and relax peacefully.
Day Trips from Wells
Four different ski resorts and mountains are located within about an hour from Wells, quite a statistic for those seeking fresh powder. The proximity of Wells to these renowned ski areas is a major draw for those who want to stay close enough to the slopes but away from the noise of a ski lodge. From Wells, you can take a day trip to one of the ski areas, Killington. Its slopes are known for being some of the best in the area, let alone the state of Vermont. Killington is nicknamed “The Beast of the East”, as it has the highest skiing elevation in Vermont, the longest ski season in the Eastern U.S., the largest vertical drop in New England, and the largest overall skiable area in New England. For all those trick savvy boarders and skiers, Killington also features six terrain parks to showcase some skills. With a place like this only an hour away from Wells, you have no excuse to miss out on riding these slopes.
Transportation in Wells
You have a few options when deciding how to get to Wells from out of the state. You can fly into Albany International Airport and rent a car to drive just under an hour and a half to Wells. Or, you can fly into Burlington and drive just under 2 hours. Either route will require a rental car, so rent one at the airport of your choice and head to Wells. You’ll need the rental car while in Wells, too, if you plan on leaving your accommodations. There is no public transportation system that will take you to the ski areas or surrounding areas (including the lakes) so a car is your best bet.
