Sandy, Utah, also known as the Heart of the Wasatch, is the ultimate base camp. This city located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains and just 13 miles south of Salt Lake City is the perfect place to visit for your Utah vacation. Nowhere else in the world has a better proximity to as wide a variety of mountain sports and outdoor recreation, with many of the country's best ski resorts nearby. Sandy has everything you need whether you hit the slopes, hit the town, or hit the sack.

Things To Do In Sandy

If you came to Utah to ski, Sandy has you covered. Only a short drive away are Alta and Snowbird which have been named the No. 1 ski resorts in the United States by SKIING Magazine for five years in a row. Other great ski resorts in the area are Brighton and Deer Valley. Whether you're hitting black diamonds or sticking to the bunny slope, each of them offer breathtaking views and a full day of family fun. Keep in mind that Deer Valley is a ski only resort, so check out the others if you'd rather carve the mountain on your snowboard. Sandy also boasts 60 miles of hiking and biking trails. After a long day on the mountain, I'm sure you'll want to rest a little. Learn more about the history of Sandy at the Sandy Museum, a historic building with two floors of displays, gift shop, and an exhibition shed outside. It's open Tuesday-Thursday from 1:00pm-5:00pm or by appointment. If the weather is nice outside, visit the Sego Lily Gardens or go shopping at one of Utah's largest shopping complexes, The South Towne Center.

Day Trips From Sandy

The 2002 Winter Olympics may have put Salt Lake City on the map, but I assure you that tourists have been loving the city long before then. Salt Lake City is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and many major tourist attractions focusing in the history of the Church. It's also a prime destination for travelers interested in outdoor sports. Of course, skiing is the most popular sport in the winter, but during the rest of the year, visitors can enjoy great hiking, biking and climbing. Big Cottonwood Canyon is just a short drive away and is a rock climbing and hiking playground. If that doesn't satisfy your hiking tooth, check out one of Utah's beautiful national parks. Bryce, Arches and Zion or only a few hours away. Rent a car and take your time meandering through the mountains, or opt for an all-inclusive tour.
