Galveston Information

About Galveston

Once home to famed pirate Jean Lafitte, boxing great Jack Johnson, and singer Barry White, Galveston is an historically significant city located on a barrier island off the Texas Gulf Coast. A city with a thriving 21st century economy and many lures for the savvy traveler, Galveston reinvented itself in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane in 1900. It continues today as a major U.S. port and commercial center, with some of the largest teaching hospitals in the state of Texas. The Port of Galveston is a top port for cruise lines with destinations in the Caribbean and also hosts a number of historic ships, including Elissa, the official Tall Ship of Texas. Galveston has a humid subtropical climate, with summer temperatures hovering in the 80s and mild winters in the mid-50s. There is some hurricane risk from June-November, so checking the Galveston Hurricane Guide may help you plan your trip. To avoid the summer crowds, plan your travel before June or after August.

Things to Do in Galveston

History and architecture buffs will go nuts exploring Galveston’s six historic districts, which contain over 60 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places and many stunning examples of 19th century architecture. These include the Silk Stocking District, with gorgeous homes constructed from the Civil War era through World War II. Other destination buildings include The Bishop’s Palace, St. Joseph’s Church - the oldest wooden building in Galveston, the Custom House - site of the ceremony officially ending the Civil War, and Ashton Villa, historic site of the Juneteenth holiday. The Strand Historic District not only contains a stunning collection of Victorian buildings, but is also a prime tourist destination for the city, with museums, antique shops (for those on the lookout for a unique island keepsake), restaurants and art galleries. Music fans will enjoy discovering the concert series at the restored Grand 1894 Opera House. Check out the many annual festivals in the historic district, including the Mardi Gras Festival and a Victorian-themed Christmas Festival called Dickens on the Strand. Other top attractions in Galveston are Moody Mansion and Gardens, the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, and the Lone Star Flight Museum.
