Corpus Christi, a southeast Texas city of 300,000, is made up of islands and beaches. The city was named by Alonso Álvarez de Pineda, a Spanish explorer who discovered this bay on the Feast of Corpus Christi, a Catholic holiday. Founded in 1839 by a military colonel, Corpus Christi began as a trading post for soldiers in the Mexican-American War. It remained a site of civil rights activism into the 20th century with the foundation of the League of United Latin American Citizens and the American GI Forum for veterans of the Mexican-American War.
