Big Bend National Park Information

About Big Bend National Park

Tucked away in the southern part of Texas, and skirting the border of Mexico, the over 800,000-acre Big Bend National Park is home to multitudes of fossils from the Cretaceous and Cenozoic periods, artifacts dating back thousands of years, and a significant protected portion of the Chihuahuan Desert. During the summer and late spring, the park experiences a dry and hot climate. However, the winter features mild weather with occasional bouts of extreme cold.

Things to do in Big Bend National Park

Adventure-seekers should consider embarking on a river trip on the Rio Grande. The journey entails floating through miles of canyons where beavers, great blue herons, and turtles often appear on the riverbank. Organizations such as Desert Sports, Big Bend River Tours, and Far Flung Outdoor Center provide equipment rentals and guided trips. With paved roads stretching more than a hundred miles, as well as backcountry dirt paths, Big Bend National Park is an ideal destination for bicycling. The park’s online website suggests a variety of different bike paths based on distance and level of difficulty. For light bicycle riding, the Panther Junction to Rio Grande Village is an excellent route. On the other hand, both the Old Ore Road and Panther Junction to the Chisos Basin are considered strenuous and challenging. Hiking trails are also abundant at Big Bend National Park. Choose from desert, mountain, and river hikes. Accordingly, visitors who own horses are allowed to go horseback riding at the park with a backcountry use permit.

Day trips from Big Bend National Park

The Mexican village of Boquillas is situated just across the border from the park. Those with a valid passport can easily cross into Mexico at the Boquillas Crossing Port of Entry. The small town is home to a modern solar farm; a couple of local restaurants including Restaurant Boquillas and Jose Falcon’s Restaurant, which serves traditional Mexican comfort food; and an abundance of vendors selling handcrafted souvenirs. Around an hour and a half’s worth of driving from Big Bend National Park is the small Texan city of Alpine. Despite being encompassed by the Chihuahuan desert, Alpine experiences cool weather during the evening due to its situation atop an elevated plateau. Points of interest at Alpine include the historic Sul Ross State University with its Museum of the Big Bend that exhibits Western art and Native American artifacts; the Brewster County Courthouse and Jail, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and the annual Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering in February.

Big Bend National Park accommodations

The vacation rentals around Big Bend National Park are perfect for stargazing due to the lack of light pollution. Enjoy a stay at an expansive ranch house with panoramic views of the mountains, to cozy houses that feel like a home away from home.

Transportation in Big Bend National Park

Since Big Bend National Park is a relatively secluded natural space, public transit to, from, and in the park, is not available. The nearest train and bus stations to the park are located about 100 miles away at the city of Alpine, Texas. Driving is the most efficient mode of transportation with several major highways leading to the park such as Farm to Market Road 170 and Texas State Highway 118.
