About Wallowa Lake
Wallowa Lake, located in Joseph, Oregon, was formed by glaciers 17,000 years ago. It is named for the Wallowa band of Nez Pierce Native Americans who occupied, but the gold rush in the late 1800s caused violent conflict that led to them leaving the area. The U.S. Government took over Wallowa lake, and tourism began in in the early 1900s. The Wonderland Inn, which functioned as an amusement park, attracted visitors to Joseph until 1940. Today, Wallowa Lake is known for its calm water, beautiful hiking, and scenic drives.
