About Sunriver
Sunriver is a planned residential and resort community located 15 miles south of Bend in Deschutes County, Oregon. It encompasses 3,300 acres along the Deschutes River’s eastern side. Formerly a World War II training facility, the site was later developed into condos starting in 1968. Nowadays, Sunriver is a fully functioning, self-governed resort town that has its own homeowners association, public works department and budget. Visitors here can enjoy luxurious amenities that include multiple swimming pools, a mall, resort, and 40 miles of pathways for walking and biking.
Things to Do in Sunriver
There is much to do in Sunriver, starting with going for s swim at The Cove pool complex. See and learn about the stars at the Sunriver Observatory, a state-of-the-art center that also includes a nature center and offers educational presentations and daytime solar viewings. Visitors can also learn about animal species and native plants via various year-round educational programs and interpretive exhibits, in addition to strolling around the nature trail and botanical garden. Go horseback riding and at Sunriver Stables, which is located on the west side of the resort along the river and offers guided trail rides and pony lessons for the younger ones as well. Book a relaxing body treatment at the Sage Springs Club & Spa, then enjoy a snack or meal at one of the various dining options available, from the Twisted River Tavern to Starbucks. Play a round of golf on one of the four courses available in the community, and during the holiday season, Sunriver Stables provides horse sleigh rides in a Victorian sleigh along the Deschutes River and through the woods.
Day Trips Near Sunriver
Go skiing at Mt. Bachelor, which is just 20 minutes from Sunriver’s Bend, Oregon ski resort. Downtown Bend is 15 miles north of the resort and has a fun mix of eateries, galleries, shops and services that cater to those visiting and looking for entertainment. Downtown Bend and The Old Mill District are home to many different shops, and Bend also has an extensive art community with galleries, a diverse selection of restaurants and Drake Park, which is a historical park that includes waterfront trails, a playground, Farmers Market and more. If you go 45 minutes north, Smith Rock State Park is a top climbing and hiking destination for people from all over the world. Crater Lake National Park is an hour and a half south of Sunriver Resort, and two hours to the east is the Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

Sunriver Resort has more than 4,000 private residences consisting of both single-family homes and condos. Rental options include summer vacation rental properties ranging from two to six bedrooms, as well as luxury homes at Caldera Springs, which includes a communal Lake House, a pool and fitness center. Transportation in Sunriver
One of the most fun ways to get around Sunriver is via bicycle. Rentals are available at the local Bike Barn, where you can choose from an assortment of bicycles before heading out on 40 plus miles of winding trails. The community is also pedestrian-friendly, making it an enjoyable and safe place to walk around and enjoy the outdoors. Rental cars are also a good way to get around, especially if you’re planning a road trip and want to venture outside of the community.
