About Sandusky
With its prime location on the southern shores of Lake Erie, Sandusky, Ohio offers abundant lakeside fun, historic small town charm and easy access to other great Ohio destinations. Sandusky is home to roughly 25,000 residents but, despite its quaint size, this Northern Ohio locale is a vacation hot spot, with roughly 7 million people visiting each year.
Things to Do in Sandusky
You could almost spend your entire visit at the lake, which offers 22 miles of shoreline and all manner of water recreation including fishing, swimming, sailing and guided cruises. Boat out to Kelleys Island State Park, perfect for nature enthusiasts, or to resort destination Put-In-Bay. Sandusky has plenty to offer outside the lake as well, including theme parks and aquatic parks full of summertime thrills. The most popular is Cedar Point Amusement Park, otherwise known as the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” with more than 300 acres of thrill rides and water recreation. Sandusky was founded in 1818 and the city’s beautiful architecture from throughout the 19th and 20th centuries is always worth seeing, especially in the historic downtown neighborhood. Take in a show at the Sandusky State Theatre, a nationally registered historic site built in 1928, and soak in the history at the Maritime Museum or the one of a kind Merry Go Round Museum. Relax and play in one of Sandusky’s many green spaces and waterfront parks, like the popular lakeside Schade-Mylander Plaza, Shoreline Park, or Historic Washington Parks, which feature unique artistic floral mounds. Rent a bike or take a stroll along the Sandusky Bay Pathway or take a canoe or kayak down the East Sandusky Bay Water Trail.
Sandusky Day Trips
Sandusky is conveniently located if you’re looking to visit other Ohio destinations. An easy hour’s drive or train ride east will get you to Cleveland, where you can visit the Historic Warehouse District or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If you’re looking for a more remote destination, the stunning expanse of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is just over an hour from Sandusky and offers pristine hiking trails and a scenic vintage train ride. Toledo, an hour to the west via car or train, boasts the Toledo Zoo and Toledo Botanical Garden. Drive two hours south to the capital, Columbus, or north into Michigan where you can reach Ann Arbor and Detroit in a little over two hours. Easiest of all, picturesque Oberlin is less than an hour away and makes for a laid-back day trip filled with history. While there, visit the Frank Lloyd Wright House.
Sandusky Accommodation
A wide range of rentals are available in Sandusky, whether you’re looking for a waterfront studio or a family-friendly house further from the action. Downtown Sandusky offers historic charm and waterfront access as well as the best shopping, dining and entertainment. If the lake is your priority, there are plenty of rentals along the miles of shoreline in town and on the Cedar Point peninsula (with convenient access to the amusement park, of course.)
