About Oak Island
Oak Island, North Carolina is a small beach town located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in southeast corner of the state south of Wilmington and north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The city was founded in 1999, forming after the merging of the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach. While the small town has a population of about 7,000 people, it’s a very popular area for tourism as the population grows to between 30,000 and 50,000 people in the summer months.

Oak Island, NC sits on the Oak Island barrier island, so it’s main draw is the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean with 12 miles of coastline with pristine beaches. The beaches here are very clean and never crowded making it a top destination in the area for a very relaxing summer vacation, especially if you’re bringing the whole family. If you’re looking for a quieter, peaceful vacation and want to avoid crowded beach areas that can be found up the East Coast, Oak Island is a great place to come. The Ocean Crest Pier is a beautiful, clean pier and is noted as one of the best piers in North Carolina for fishing as well. You can check out the Oak Island Lighthouse, which was built in 1958 and stands at 169-feet tall and tours are offered for free year-round. High Tide Helicopters is a fun way to spend a few hours where you can go up in safe, modern helicopters for an unforgettable tour of the surrounding area from up in the air. There are a lot of fun things to do right outside of downtown Oak Island as well all within a 15-30 minute drive from downtown. Shallotte River Swamp Park and Outdoor Park is one of the most fun adventures you can take where you can enjoy tours of the Shallotte River and Swamp area by boat, or you can take fun zip line tours, which are great for the whole family. You can visit the historic Brunswick Town and Fort Anderson, founded in 1726 and burned down by the British forces in 1776. The area is now a great historic site where you can learn a lot about the long history of the area dating back to colonial times. A fun afternoon can be spent at Ingram Planetarium where you can enjoy live star shows and laser light shows as well as a fun Hurricane Simulator where winds reach 78 mph. For adults, the Silver Coast Winery is a great place where you can enjoy tasting wine they’ve been making for 10 years and tour the beautiful vineyard as well.

The best choice is to head to Myrtle Beach, SC, which is only an hour drive from Oak Island and you can enjoy a fun-filled day in one of the most popular tourist destinations on the East Coast. The historic river district and Riverwalk winding around the Cape Fear River is beautiful and you’ll find plenty of great dining and shopping options in the area. There are three great island beach towns by Wilmington as well with Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach where you can enjoy more great beach life.
