Saratoga Springs is a charming city in Saratoga County in northeast New York. It sits south of Lake George and is just north of the state’s capital of Albany. Saratoga Springs is a very popular tourist town, especially in the summer months with the Saratoga Race Course for thoroughbred horse racing, the mineral springs and the great restaurants and local shopping.
There’s plenty to do in Saratoga Springs making it a common tourist destination in upstate New York. The Saratoga Race Course is a must-visit in the summer months to see thoroughbred horse racing at one of the oldest and most prestigious tracks in the country. It’s over 150 years old and the first race was just a month after the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, so there’s plenty of history here and it’s a lot of fun if you’re visiting between late July through Labor Day when the horses run. There are plenty of beautiful natural areas in Saratoga Springs as well. In Saratoga Spa State Park, there are recreational activities like biking, hiking, fishing, disc golf as well as two golf courses on the property. The state park is a National Historic Landmark that also holds the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the Spa Little Theater, the National Museum of Dance, the Saratoga Automobile Museum, the Gideon Putnam Resort and the Roosevelt Baths and Spa facility. The beautiful Congress Park in Saratoga offers lush gardens, fountains and springs and is a great place to visit. The park is also home to the historic 1870s Canfield Casino, which is no longer in use for gambling but is a great piece of architecture and history as you can also explore the Saratoga Springs History Museum inside. You can also check out world-class museum for horse racing in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, which is interesting for all. The Saratoga Winery is a good stop for a good atmosphere and wine tasting experience. Another fun opportunity is to take a hot air balloon ride Adirondack Balloon Flights, which will be an experience you’ll never forget.
Lake George, New York is a short 30-minute drive from Saratoga Springs and is a great option for a day trip when visiting the area. Lake George is a charming small town located on the 32-mile long lake and there are plenty of recreational activities on the lake as well as great boat tours from the Lake George Steamboat Company, which are great experiences. Visit the historic Fort William Henry to learn about its relevance in the French and Indian War back in the mid-1700s. You can top off your Lake George experience at the popular Adirondack Winery. If you’re looking for a fun recreational experience, you can hike up into the Adirondack Mountains, which start about 10 miles north of Saratoga Springs and stretch over six million acres. You can catch some picturesque, scenic views and enjoy a day in the beautiful mountains exploring. It might be a stretch, but if you’re willing to take a day trip three hours from Saratoga Springs, you can visit New York City. If you’ve never been, it’d be hard to pass up the opportunity of taking in all of the sights and sounds and tourist attractions of one of the most popular cities in the entire world.
