The name “Poughkeepsie,” pronounced “puh-KEEP-see,” derives from the Wappinger word meaning “the reed-covered lodge by the little-water place.” From the abundance of registered historic places to the variety of activities, Poughkeepsie is sure to have something for every traveler.
