About Cayuga Lake

Just under 40 miles long, Cayuga Lake is the longest of the glacial Finger Lakes in central New York. Carved by glaciers, the lake is 435 feet deep at its deepest point, and is one of the deepest lakes in the United States. Rich in culture and history, Cayuga Lake is an interesting destination where you can spend a few hours or several days. People are drawn to the lake for its relaxing atmosphere and peaceful nature, as well as the famous Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, which makes it the perfect getaway from the busy world we live in.

Things to Do in Cayuga Lake

One of the most popular things to do during your next visit to Cayuga Lake is a visit to the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, which features stunning waterfalls, local restaurants, and a special blend of award-winning wines. The first organized and longest-running wine trail n the country, Cayuga Lake Wine Trail offers gorgeous views of Cayuga Lake, Taughannock Falls, and the vineyards. Wineries to visit include Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery, Goose Watch Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Company, and many others. Goose Watch and Thirsty Owl are two of four wineries that are accessible by boat, and are a close walk from the dock to the winery. The city of Ithaca, which is where both Cornell University and Ithaca College are located, is at the southern end of the lake. Ithaca Yacht Club is a few miles north of Ithaca, and numerous boat tours and fishing charters are available at the lake as well. When traveling through the Ithaca area, the Ithaca Farmers’ Market is a must-see and offers everything from fresh flowers and produce to various handmade crafts and art pieces. There are also plenty of dining and entertainment spots in this charming town as well.

Day Trips Near Cayuga Lake

Cayuga Lake is just over an hour south of Syracuse, which is home to Syracuse University. The town of Rochester is an hour and eighteen minutes northwest of Cayuga Lake, and Buffalo is two hours east. Go an extra 17 miles and you’ll reach Niagara Falls, which are three stunning waterfalls that are along the border between Canada and the United States.

Cayuga Lake Accommodation

The east shore of the lake is home to cute small towns like Myers, Aurora and Union Springs, while the west shore includes Poplar Beach and Canoga. The entire village of Aurora is in the National Register of Historic Places, and is also where Wells College is located. Ithaca is a beautiful town with waterfalls and gorges located at the southern end of the lake, not to mention that it is where Ithaca College is located.

Transportation in Cayuga Lake

Get a rental car and enjoy an 87-mile drive along the Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway, which circles the lake and also links four state parks, 19 wineries, a National Wildlife Refuge, and various lakeside restaurants, villages and shops. There are also many bicycle trails around Cayuga Lake, starting in Ithaca and offering some of the best water views during the entire trip.
