Things to do in South Chatham
Start your trip off with a little history lesson and head to the Atwood House and Museum. Here, learn about the history and culture of Chatham and Cape Cod through preserved records, exhibits, and artifacts. Next, stop by the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center where both adults and children will learn about the fascinating, untold story of WWII submarine searching and code breaking. For even more fun, check out the Chatham Shark Center. Although it’s a bit small, the kids will love this shark-centric research center where they can partake in interactive Great White Shark exhibits. Don’t miss the virtual reality experience where you can swim with sharks! Visit the Chatham Lighthouse, an active Coast Guard station, and enjoy the view of the ocean from it. It was established in 1808 and is built of cast iron and brick. Although it’s not open to the public, the Coast Guard does arrange certain days where visitors are welcome to come in and climb the steps. While you’re there, walk along the Chatham Lighthouse Beach. You’ll get incredible views of the ocean, houses lining the shoreline, and can enjoy some time basking in the sunshine. For a night out in South Chatham, head to the Chatham Orpheum Theater. At this historic, 1915 theater, you can see a live performance or a movie on the big screen. There’s even an in-house café where you can grab a bite to eat before or after the show, and a movie-themed cocktail, a beer, or glass of wine.
Day Trips from South Chatham
If you have a day to spare, head an hour up to the tip of the Cape and check out Provincetown. Known by locals as P-Town, this place is a favorite place to be in the summer. Bike or stroll down Commercial Street, the main thoroughfare, and explore the locally-owned shops, restaurants, and bars that line the street. Enjoy an adult beverage on a patio overlooking the water or grab an ice cream cone at PTOWN SCOOP. Make sure to climb to the top of the Pilgrim Monument, a 252 monument commemorating the history of the Mayflower pilgrims, as Provincetown is the original location the pilgrims landed. Pilgrim Monument is also the tallest all-granite structure in the United States, so once you climb it you can cross that off your bucket list. You’ll also get a breathtaking view of the Atlantic from high up in the monument, so don’t miss this attraction!
