Cape Elizabeth Information

About Cape Elizabeth

Historic Cape Elizabeth is a coastal town on an outcropping just south of Portland, Maine. The area is steeped in history, with colonial settlement dating back hundreds of years. The area was explored and mapped by John Smith (yes, that John Smith) in the early 1600’s and King Charles I himself dubbed the area Cape Elizabeth. After centuries as a farming and fishing community, Cape Elizabeth remains a quaint seaside town with plenty of rural residential charm and historic richness.

Things to Do in Cape Elizabeth

With access to the ocean and acres of rural land and national parks, Cape Elizabeth is the perfect spot for beach lovers, history buffs, and anyone looking for a peaceful slice of nature. In the warmer summer months (this is Maine, remember!) the ocean is prime for swimming, boating, and fishing. Head to Crescent Beach State Park where you’ll find a mile long beach with clean sand and calm waves perfect for swimming, thanks to its location on a protected cove. Kayak or canoe around the peaceful Great Pond. Fort Williams Park is a must, offering more than 90 acres of park grounds for biking, walking, sports and picnics, as well as the eponymous historic fort, the Goddard Mansion and Maine’s oldest lighthouse, (and one of the most popular local sights) Portland Head Light. If it’s lighthouses you’re looking for, Cape Elizabeth is the place. In addition to the Portland Head Light, you can visit Cape Elizabeth Light and, a little further north, Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, Bug Light, and Ram Island Lighthouse.

Cape Elizabeth Day Trips

Cape Elizabeth is technically part of Portland’s metropolitan area, and that means the heart of the bustling Maine metropolis is less than ten miles away. Visit the historic Old Port, gorge on seafood at one of Portland’s highly lauded restaurants (like Street and Co.,) and check out the many area museums, featuring everything from maritime history to Colonial houses to art. About an hour north from Cape Elizabeth, you’ll find Maine’s capital city of Augusta and even more history. Check out New England’s oldest surviving wooden fort, the Old Fort Western, the Maine State Museum, or tour the governor’s mansion, the Blaine House, which was built in 1862 and is open to the public.

Cape Elizabeth Accommodation

Whether it’s the historical sights, beautiful outdoors, or oceanside fun that draws you to Cape Elizabeth, you’ll find vacation rentals minutes away from all of these. Cape Elizabeth is largely residential and rural. For the easiest walkability to things like groceries and banks, look near the Elizabeth Park area around Ocean Street or Shore Road. For easy access to nature and the beach, book a vacation rental near Crescent Beach State Park.

Cape Elizabeth Transportation

Cape Elizabeth doesn’t have a public transportation service but the town boasts 24 miles of multi-use Greenbelt Trails and paths that cross through town, making for easy and pleasant walking and biking. There are taxi services available but for the most accessibility visitors will most likely want to have a car.
