Shreveport Information

About Shreveport

Overlooking vast wetlands, pine tree forests, and the Red River is Shreveport, the third largest city in Louisiana. With its low elevation, the city experiences a humid subtropical climate with frequent rainfall that occurs especially during the summer and spring seasons. Shreveport was founded in the early 19th century to serve as a meeting point between the Texas Trail and tributary of the Atchafalaya and Mississippi rivers. Shreveport has been named by the National Civic League as an All-American City 3 times.

Things to do in Shreveport

Shreveport is home to an abundance of festivals and celebrations. In the springtime, Shreveport hosts a particularly vibrant Mardi Gras replete with parades, masquerades, and music. The month of October brings the Red River Revel, an annual event filled with art, food, and concerts where the proceeds from each fair goes into hosting the following year’s festival. Another yearly event held in Shreveport is Mudbug Madness, a street fair that celebrates Cajun culture with a crawfish boil accompanied by blues and jazz music. As for more relaxed attractions, Shreveport has numerous museums and recreational areas. Among the most notable points of interests include Chimp Haven, a sanctuary for chimpanzees; the Gardens of the American Rose Center, an expansive botanical garden; and the Barksdale Global Power Museum, a collection of aircrafts and exhibits situated at the Barksdale Air Force Base.

Day trips from Shreveport

Located southward from Shreveport with about 5 hours’ worth of driving is the famed city of New Orleans. Known for its extraordinary Mardi Gras celebrations, New Orleans is the go-to destination during the days leading up to Lent. In addition to hosting this spirited fête, New Orleans boasts the French Quarter, a historic neighborhood lined with impressive structures built in the Spanish architectural style. Contrary to its name, the French Quarter’s namesake colonial architecture was destroyed in the late 18th century by the Great New Orleans Fire. At New Orleans, visitors can embark on a swamp tour; munch on tasty beignet and coffee at the acclaimed Café du Monde; and indulge in flavorful Cajun food. Dallas, Texas is accessible from Shreveport with a 3 hours’ drive westward. This major Texan city is home to a gorgeous, naturally diverse landscape. Accordingly, nestled in and around Dallas are many bodies of water including White Rock Lake, Bachman Lake, and North Lake. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden features walking paths encompassed by lovely plots of different types of flowers. The city also offers cultural attractions such as Perot Museum of Nature and Science, John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, and Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre.

Shreveport accommodations

Shreveport features hundreds of vacation rentals that exude a relaxed, cozy ambiance. Properties range from comfortable lakefront townhouses to spacious studios with an awe-inspiring view of nature. With plenty of accommodations situated in friendly neighborhoods throughout Shreveport, there is a home away from home available for every occasion and budget.

Transportation in Shreveport

The city’s public bus transportation system is called the Shreveport Area Transit System (SporTran). Bus routes on SporTran run 7 days a week from the early morning to midnight. On Sundays, however, there may be limited service. Shreveport also has a robust highway system similar to that of Houston and Dallas. Consequently, it would be convenient and easy to navigate the city via car.
