Patoka Lake Information
About Patoka Lake
Whether you’re looking for a place to relax on a houseboat and bask in the warm sunshine or explore a National Forest that nearly encircles the lake, Patoka Lake should be your next vacation destination. The lake is located in Birdseye, Indiana and stretches for more than 8,000 acres. In addition, the almost 20,000 acres of and surrounding the lake offers visitors sightings of bald eagles and other incredible wildlife. Take a trip to Patoka Lake and enjoy all the natural scenery and outdoor activities it has to offer.
Things to do in Patoka Lake
The Hoosier National Forest spans for more than 200,000 acres and houses a uniquely rare ecosystem. Trek by foot or hop on a bike to explore the 260 miles of park trails. Or, better yet, ride horseback on designated trails and soak in your surroundings. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one of the five federally-listed threatened and endangered species that call the park home; sightings of the Indiana bat, bald eagle, rough pigtoe, and fan shell mussels are all possible in this park! Hoosier National Forest may be a hotbed for endangered and threatened species sightings, but Patoka Lake itself has some very interesting creatures, too. The lake houses 50 mammal species, 125 fish species, 36 reptilian species, and 28 amphibian species, not to mention 142 bird species. Freshwater jellyfish are even commonly seen in the waters of Patoka Lake. With all this wildlife, it’s no wonder Patoka Lake hosted the 2008 Crappie USA National Classic and is known widely as one of Indiana’s top fishing lakes. If you’re a water baby, there are plenty of activities for you to do during your vacation. Rent a houseboat and take a break from reality, or bring a speedboat and jet out on the water. Wake-boarding, water skiing, and kayaking are all popular things to do on the lake. When you’ve had enough fun in the sun, head to Somewhere on the Lake, a restaurant serving up some great grub and ambiance, not to mention a great outdoor patio. If you’re thinking about cooking your own meals, your closest full service grocery store is Birdseye General Store. You can also pick up deli sandwiches, pizza, and nearly everything you need to make your vacation complete.
Day Trips from Patoka Lake
Marengo Cave is a designated National Natural Landmark and is just a short, 35-minute drive from Patoka Lake. Considered a classic example of a mature trunk passage in the middle stage of development, this park spans across 122 acres of forested hills and valleys, while the cave itself stretches for 5 miles. Take a visit here and you may not be alone; Marengo Cave is Indiana’s most visited show cave. Take a walking tour that’s great for kids and adults alike, or try crawling through a cave simulator that allows groups to expand upon their cave experience. Make a reservation and take a two-hour tour of the undeveloped sections of the cavern. Just five minutes away is Cave Country Canoes, an outdoor adventure-lover’s paradise. Located along the Blue River, you can take a guided tour in a canoe or kayak and experience the scenery while you paddle through Class I Rapids. Check out the wildlife, including otters, hellbenders, and herons, as well as the limestone bluffs towering over you. This is a day trip opportunity you definitely shouldn’t miss!
