About Lake Monroe
The lake is the largest lake entirely situated in the state of Indiana with 10,750 acres of water surface area. It is also home to Indiana's only federally protected U.S. Wilderness Area, the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area, located on the south shore. Construction on the lake began in 1960 when Salt Creek was dammed south of Bloomington, Indiana. It was finished only five years later in 1965, at a cost of $16.5 million. Monroe Lake, Indiana, is full of rolling hills, beautiful thick forests and babbling streams, an excellent choice for a relaxing vacation. Only 50 miles south of Indianapolis, the Lake is located near Brown County State Park. It is close enough to be convenient to get to, but far enough away to feel like a true getaway.
Things to do in Lake Monroe
As the largest lake in Indiana, Monroe Lake has plenty of room for fishing, skiing, wakeboarding and tubing. There are three inviting beaches perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and they are all equipped with bathhouses. Get on the water with a boat rental available at the Fourwinds Marina. Marinas in Paynetown and Cutright also have boat rentals. If you want to stay on dry land, check out the miles of trails for horseback riding, biking, and hiking. Don't forget to pack a picnic! Transportation in Lake Monroe
Monroe Lake is straddled by two main roads, State Rd 37 on the west and State Rd. 446 on the east. To get to Fourwinds Lakeside Resort and Marina, take S Fairfax Rd. until you reach the water.
