In historic times, Princeville was a haven for Hawaiian royalty and is now home to Kauai’s most famous luxury hotel, along with world-class golf courses, high-end estates and condos. Princeville was named after a famous visit by Prince Albert Kamehameha in 1860, who was visiting a local plantation. Located in the North Shore of Kauai, Princeville is the perfect destination for a relaxing getaway, although there is plenty to do as well, from shopping and fine dining to the lush green mountains and views overlooking majestic Hanalei Bay.

Definitely stop by the St. Regis Princeville Resort for breakfast overlooking Hanalei Bay, a round of golf, or indulge in a tropical-inspired treatment at their Halele’a Spa, which is an 11,000-square-foot architectural wonder that offers 12 treatment rooms and exemplifies the Aloha spirit with signature personalized service. Other popular golf courses include Line Nine Golf Course, Woods Nine Golf Course and Ocean Nine Golf Course. Check out Queen’s Bath off Kapiolani Loop, which is a basin of water that is created during low tide when the surf gets trapped among lava rocks and turns into a warm bathing pool. Queen’s Bath was named after Prince Albert’s mother and is most ideal during the summer months, but is completely closed to visitors during the winter (and during high tide when the surf can be deadly). Go shopping at the Princeville Shopping Center, which has views of Bali Hai and Kauai’s ancient taro fields. Go for a tour of the lush Princeville Botanical Gardens, take a hike at Hideaways Beach, and see the entire island during a helicopter tour with Sunshine Helicopters Princeville for an amazing experience. The nearby town of Hanalei is just 11-minutes away and is home to a flourishing art scene with historical vibes. Other places that make for great day trips include Lihue, Kapaa and Poipu. Lihue is the central commercial center of Kauai and is where the Lihue Airport is located. Kapaa means “solid” in Hawaiian, and is located on the eastern side of the island. It has lots of shopping centers as well as the Coconut Marketplace, which is filled with antique and craft shops. Poipu is located in Kauai’s South Shore and is home to some of the best beaches for swimming, diving and water sports.

Due to its popularity as a resort town, Princeville is home to countless condos and homes that many residents rent out to vacationers. It contains a mixture of upscale single-family homes and condos, and the entire neighborhood is beautifully landscaped. There are many large homes and condos located on Kuhio Highway (also known as Route 56), which is the main highway on the north and east shore of Kauai. Many of these homes enjoy vast ocean and nature views. There are numerous rental car companies on the island, and you can easily pick one up at Lihue Airport. Rental cars are the ideal form of transportation around Princeville so that you can get to other parts of the island whenever you want, but you can also catch taxis which are fairly abundant as well. There is also the local Kauai Bus that services the island and has numerous routes, including two that stop at Lihue Airport.
