“Poipu” means “crashing waves” in Hawaiian and is a beach town located on Kauai’s southern side. The town is home to several high-end hotels and resorts, a large shopping center, and offers visitors a variety of water activities, as well as a natural ocean wading pool. Things to Do in Poipu
There are several points of interest in Poipu that you definitely should add to your must-see list. Allerton Garden is an 80-acre botanical garden situated open to the public that is situated next to Lawa’i Bay, with an assortment of garden rooms, pools, fountains, statues, and miniature waterfalls. Poipu Beach Park was named “best beach in America” by “Dr Beach” in 2001, and has designated areas for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. The Moir Gardens are located west of Poipu Beach Park on the Kiahuna plantation, were created in the 1930s, and feature a mixture of botanicals including rare cactus and succulents, orchids, and water lily ponds. Spouting Horn is located on the southern coast of Kauai in the Koloa district and is known for its crashing waves that erode lava rocks on the coastline, creating narrow openings for water to shoot upwards, which can be quite the site to behold. Makauwahi Cave is the largest limestone cave in Hawaii that can be reached via a sinkhole, and contains artifacts and fossils that date back over 10,000 years. Poipu Shopping Village boasts some of the best restaurants and shops on Kauai and includes free daytime entertainment.
Day Trips Near Poipu
Things to do near Poipu include driving up to the North Shore area of Kauai and spending time in Princeville, home of the St. Regis Resort. Go for a hike at Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, checked out the lighthouse at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, and stop by Ha’ena State Park and Lumaha’i Beach to get some sun and enjoy the beach. Go for a hike at Waimea Canyon State Park, which is located on the western side of Kauai and is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, spans 10 miles long and reaches up to 3,000 feet deep. Spend some time in Hanalei Bay, a scenic beach also on the north shore of the island that has clear waters and is a great spot for snorkeling and swimming. Stop by Hanalei Taro Farms to sample poi, a Hawaiian food and luau delicacy, and visit Ka Ulu O Laka Heiau, a native Hawaiian temple for Laka, the goddess of hula.
