About Mountain View
Located on the Big Island of Hawaii at an elevation of 1,440-feet, Mountain View is a beautiful town with fertile land that has historic roots connected to the sugar trade. Formerly connected to the city of Hilo by the Hawaii Consolidated Road, Mountain View is now involved in coffee production and is home to one of the most renowned coffee mills—the Hilo Coffee Mill. There are also many nurseries boasting a wealth of botanical diversity in town, along with stunning mountain and ocean views, scenic spots and outdoor activities, offering visitors plenty to do and see during their next trip.
Things to Do in Mountain View
Since the decline of the sugar industry in Hawaii, Mountain View has shifted its focus to coffee production. There are several coffee mills located in town, including the Hilo Coffee Mill—a 24-acre plantation that offers coffee roasting tours and has a gift shop and café. Mountain View is also home to many nurseries that specialize in anthuriums, including the Hawaiian Flower Gardens Nursery. Be sure to check out Black Sand Beach, which features a black shoreline made up of exploded lava particles. Another beautiful beach is Papakolea Beach, which is known for its green sand. If you’re up for an adventure, check out the local tree house located on top of Kilauea, near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is just under 20 minutes away from Mountain View.
Day Trips Near Mountain View
There are many incredible towns and beaches nearby that make for great day trips near Mountain View. If you are visiting the Kona side of the island, be sure to visit Kahalu’u Beach Park, which is often referred to as “turtle beach” and is a great spot for snorkeling. On the Hilo side of the island, Onekahakaha Beach Park is a beautiful white sand beach where visitors can swim in the clear blue water. Check out Hawaii’s highest waterfall (Hiilawe) at Waipi’o Valley, which is is also home to a black sand beach and a lush rainforest. Waipi’o Valley is also known as the Valley of the Kings and can be found at the end of Highway 240. There are many great hiking opportunities here, and you can cool off after your excursion by going for a swim under the waterfall.
Mountain View Accommodation
There are several nice areas where visitors can rent a nice home and stay in and around Mountain View. There are plenty of beautiful homes and accommodations in Hilo Town, as well as near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park—where visitors can walk directly up to the flow for a firsthand look. There are also nice island-style homes with nice views near Black Sand Beach, the fishing cove at Ninole, and the rain forests of Mauna Loa.
Transportation in Mountain View
The best way to get around Mountain View is via rental car, which makes it easy to access other parts of the island as well. Some travelers may take taxis to some of the major destinations around the island that are not as readily accessible by walking. Shared ride taxi service is also available 24 hours a day in the more urban parts of Hilo. A new Hele-On Kako’o paratransit service has begun servicing the Hilo and Kona areas, and is available for qualifying individuals who have origin and destination points within a one-mile corridor off the intra-Hilo and Intra-Kona fixed routes.
