Things to Do in Makena
Makena Beach is one of Maui’s largest beaches and is made up of two parts: Little Beach and Big Beach. Previously only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles, the Makena Beach area became accessible by road beginning in the early 1980s. Big Beach is 2/3 mile long and is a great spot for swimming, snorkeling and body boarding, whereas Little Beach is accessed from the far right of Big Beach and requires some hiking to get to, but it offers calmer ocean conditions and a combination of sunny and shades areas. Other things to do include shopping at the Shops at Wailea, which is a high-end shopping center filled with brand name stores and located near the four and five-star resorts. Go horseback riding on the historic Ulupalukua Ranch, which is home to the Makena Stables and is owned by the Borge family, covering over 20,000 acres. Relax by playing golf at the Wailea Golf Club, the number one luxury resort in all of Hawaii, and take in some live music and dinner at Mulligans on the Blue, one of the popular entertainment venues in Wailea.
Day Trips Near Makena
There are many great day trip opportunities in Maui, including ‘Iao Valley, which is a state park that offers paved trails throughout. From Makena it takes approximately 40 minutes to drive to from Highway 31. La Perouse Bay is located just further south of Makena and is a popular place to see Maui’s most recent lava flow. It takes twenty minutes to get there by car and is just three miles past the State Park sign for Makena Beach.
Makena Accommodation
There is a wide variety of accommodation on Maui, from oceanfront home to luxury condos. In South Maui, Kihei is a popular place to stay and has a wide variety of condos located near the resorts. Wailea is another great area in South Maui, with access to many beaches and great weather year-round. However, both Kihei and Wailea are not as close to the Hana Highway and Haleakala, and there is less shopping and fewer upscale restaurants located nearby.
Transportation in Makena
Renting a car is the best way to get around the island, especially if you want drive to places that are located further away, including West and North Maui. There are approximately 25 different rental car companies on the island. The Maui Bus public transit service has 13 bus routes that provide service throughout the island, and all of the routes run seven days a week, holidays included. Fares range between $1 and $3 per ride. Motorcycles, mopeds and scooters are also available for rental and are unique ways to see the island.
