Lake Blackshear Information

About Lake Blackshear

Despite being manmade, Lake Blackshear is a nature escape that rivals any of Mother Earth’s creations. Blackshear was created from the construction of the Crisp County Power Dam in 1925. The lake, covering around 8,500 acres, is about 20 miles long and a little over one mile wide. Georgia Veterans State Park lies to the east of the body of water, where its namesake Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club provides optimal views of the lake.

Things to do in Lake Blackshear

Drink in the view of Lake Blackshear, where Cypress trees grow from the middle of the lake. When the dam was built, trees in the area weren’t cut down under the belief they would die once submerged. However some of the trees continued to thrive, and they live on in the middle of the lake. Stroll around the lake while taking in the view, or opt for a picnic by the shore. Venture into the state park, which features a museum with memorabilia from the Revolutionary War to the present. The park, established in 1931, serves as a memorial to American veterans. On the grounds, visitors will find an 18-hole golf course, a model airplane flying field and the Lake Blackshear Resort. The resort itself houses a private golf club, beach, marina and SAM Shortline excursion train, which runs from Cordele to Plains in Georgia. In terms of recreational activities in the area, visitors can go boating, waterskiing, or bird watching, to name a few. In addition, there are ski and pontoon boats available for rent, as well as ski doo and bike rentals.

Day trips from Lake Blackshear

Hop aboard the Southwest Georgia Excursion Train (SAM Shortline) for a scenic countryside tour through historic towns. The air-conditioned, 1949 vintage cars will take passengers through four towns. Tourists will get their fill of the attractions, history, dining and shopping along a route that covers Cordele, Americus, Leslie and Plains, Georgia. A summer trip to Lake Blackshear will make it the perfect time to visit the nearby town of Cordele, which calls itself “Watermelon capital of the world.” The town holds its annual watermelon festival each June, featuring events including the 4H Dog Show, Seed Spitting Contest, Watermelon Horseshoe Tournament, Fishing Rodeo, and Watermelon Decorating Contest. Pine Mountain, around 2 hours away by car, is home to the Chipley Historical Center. The site, which on in the list of the National Register of Historical Places, is a treasure trove of historical items such as photographs and documents from the area. The Pine Mountain Trail is a possible stop along the way. It’s within Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, located just a few miles from the historical center. Visitors can experience a bit of history while enjoying many of the outdoor activities the park has to offer.
