Manitou Springs Information

About Manitou Springs

Located in the heart of Colorado, this mountain town has everything from outdoor attractions to shops and art galleries. Originally founded as a “scenic health resort” because of its mineral springs, Manitou Springs continues to be a destination for those seeking a getaway. Its historic downtown is a fine arts entertainment mecca, with street performers, free concerts, and plenty of boutique stores unique to the area. The quaint small town is the perfect place for a family vacation or a couple’s retreat, and its proximity to nature makes it a popular thrill-seeker’s hideaway. Check out what Manitou Springs has to offer!

Things to do in Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs is situated at the foot of Pike’s Peak, a natural home to many outdoor attractions. Take a ride on Cog Railway atop Pike’s Peak, the highest train ride in the United States and the highest cog train in the world. The ride starts at 6,500 feet and climbs to just over an elevation of 14,000 feet. The view from the top is breathtaking The Royal Gorge is the place to go for whitewater rafting of all levels. Whether you’re taking a leisurely float with your family and want some scenic views of the gorge or hitting the waters for some Class III rapids, you’ll find the perfect rafting trip to suit your needs. The Cave of the Winds offers visitors a dramatic limestone archway and dark, damp caves to explore. While at the cave, catch a ride on Terror-Dactyl, a swing ride with 200-foot drop where you’ll free fall at nearly 100 mph! The name of the town isn’t just for show. Manitou Springs is home to eight different mineral springs, each of them open to the public. Stop in at the Manitou Springs Visitor Center and grab a free map of the springs and a sampling cup. If you don’t have time for them all, check out Navajo Spring, a soda spring located beneath a popcorn and candy store. The spring was famous for producing natural mineral water and today you can pump that water by hand to enjoy. Cheyenne Spring House is also a soda spring. Its sweet waters are available for the public to try and their flavor comes from limestone aquifers that could be nearly 20,000 years old.

Day Trips from Manitou Springs

Colorado Springs is just a 15-minute drive from Manitou Springs. Start your day here by taking the self-guided walking tour of the Art on the Streets, a city-wide exhibit of unique sculptures. You’ll explore a majority of downtown by the time you finish the tour. Then, head to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. It was built in 1936 and, to this day, remains a nationally accredited museum, theater, and an art school, to name a few things. You’ll want to budget some time to see all that this center has to offer. Next, hit Phantom Canyon Brewing Company in downtown Colorado Springs. Enjoy one of sixteen beers on tap outdoors on their patio while you take in the view of the mountains in the background. For dinner, be sure to stop by El Super Taco where you can get (arguably) the best Mexican food in town.
