Durango started out as a mining town in 1880 serving the San Juan mining district and still keeps its old western town charm. Much of the 1953 western movie, The Naked Spur, was shot in Durango along with parts of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969.

Day trips from Durango
Durango is the perfect basecamp for day trips to Mesa Verde National Park, Chimney Rock National Monument, Hovenweep National Monument, or Four Corners National Monument. Mesa Verde, translating to "green table" protects nearly 5,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings giving you a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years. Chimney Rock National Monument also gives you a rare look into an ancient world. This archaeological site located at the southern edge of the San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado lets you walk in the footsteps of the Ancestral Puebloans of the Chaco Canyon. Chimney Rock preserves 200 ancient homes and ceremonial buildings, and a hike to the top is just half of a mile. Hovenweep National Monument includes six prehistoric villages that were built between 1200 and 1300 AD. The Four Corners National Monument is the only place in the United States where you can in four different states at the same time. Talk about an awesome photo opportunity!

Transportation in Durango
The closest airport to Durango is the Durango-La Plata Regional Airport which is actually located near Ignacio. If you're driving, Durango is served by U.S. Highway 160, also known as the Old Spanish Trail, running east-west and U.S. Highway 550, running to the north and south. North of Durango, U.S. 550 is nicknamed the Million Dollar Highway, and is part of the scenic San Juan Skyway. Once you're in Durango, there are many bus routes serving the area which usually run Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm.
