Things to do in Alamosa

Home to Adams State University, Alamosa has a small town feel as well as the benefits of being a college town. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of the most popular spots to visit around Alamosa. Explore the tallest sand dunes in the country, as well as forests and mountains. There’s so much to see, and campgrounds for you to stay at. Zapata Falls gives you a great view of the Sand Dunes, with lots of hiking trails around. In winter, the falls freeze beautifully, or rush by in summer. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad excursion is a train ride that will take you through the mountains, with unbelievable views. The train ride will take you back in time, and help you to appreciate Colorado’s natural beauty. You can also go fishing on the Rio Grande itself, and enjoy “Summer Fest on the Rio” in June.

Day trips from Alamosa

The Rio Grande National Forest is under an hour and a half away from Alamosa. Explore the millions of acres that the forest spans, with mountains, trees, and breathtaking views. Explore the trails, and even go camping. Santa Fe in New Mexico is two and a half hour drive away from Alamosa, but definitely worth the trip. Check out the vibrant town, with the adobe houses and red hot chilli. When you’re not soaking up the sun and enjoying the food, find all kinds of art in Santa Fe. Visit the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, as well as the Museum of International Folk Art.
