Mill Valley Information

About Mill Valley

Mill Valley sits about 14 miles north of San Francisco in the gorgeously green Marin County. Nestled between Richardson Bay and Mount Tamalpais, this small town rests on marshlands and in wooded canyons filled with towering redwood trees. Mill Valley has relatively wet winters and dry summers, with temperatures that rarely drop below freezing and peak around 90 F. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of park lands, Mill Valley provides the perfect getaway from fast-paced city life, without actually being far from it’s conveniences. The natural wilderness all around instills a sense of conservancy that is a way of life in the area. The idyllic town even inspired Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums and landed a reference in his 1951 classic On the Road.

Things to do in Mill Valley

Downtown Mill Valley offers premium spas, beer and wine bars, theaters, and specialty restaurants. Check out the historic Sweetwater Music Hall and Cafe. Somewhat of a local landmark, it was established in the 1970s as a cultural roots music and food hub. There’s also romantic El Paseo (part-owned by rock star Sammy Hagar), local favorite Molina for California Coastal cuisine, and casual Mill Valley Beerworks. There’s also authentic and flavorful Thai and Indian haunts that round-out the food landscape in town. Hiking and biking are the best way to explore the gorgeous surrounding wild lands and coastal plains. Hike Blithedale Summit Open Space Preserve or Cascade Falls Park for easy family-friendly walks. There’s also Tennessee Valley Trailhead that leads to a beach, a perfect spot for picnicking. Muir Woods National Monument protects over 200 acres of old growth coast redwood trees, submerged under a foggy marine climate. Towering trees with shaded trails set the forest apart aesthetically from the rest. You can walk up to the Muir Beach Overlook across the park and take the iconic staircase down to the outlook on the Pacific Ocean. Dipsea Trail on Mount Tamalpais State Park is one of the most famous, and more challenging, hikes in Marin County. Spanning more than 9 miles and lined with wild flowers, the trail begins in Muir Woods and ends on Stinson Beach. Tours can also be booked for exploring nature & wildlife on foot, by air, or on horseback!

Sausalito and Tiburon are two bucolic towns sitting on Richardson Bay. Plenty of atmospheric dining spots and unique architectural designs make just walking around pleasant in these towns. Stop by Bar Bocce in Sausalito, a water front hangout with excellent food, local beer and wine, and outdoor seating. There’s a fire pit and bocce court with sweeping views of the Bay on the back patio. Afterwards, stroll down the main road between the water and town for ice cream, coffee, and more scenic viewpoints. Mill Valley is a quick trip across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. There are several famous must-see neighborhoods in the city, including Fisherman’s Wharf for seafood markets, North Beach for Irish coffee and Italian food, Chinatown for dim sum, and Coit Tower for 360 views of the city. You can also tour the infamous Alcatraz Island. Discover the iconic prison and the island’s historical roots in Northern California! Rodeo Cove, a pebbly beach with hiking trails overlooking the ocean, resides on the edge of the Marin Headlands. After picnicking there, stop by the Marine Mammal Center and Golden Gate Bridge overlook for grand views of the bridge, city, bay, and Pacific Ocean.
