Davis Information
About Davis
Does biking past a seemingly endless sea of interesting cafes, restaurants, and shops in a very artsy environment sound like your idea of a great time? If so, you should absolutely consider visiting Davis. To say that Davis and bicycling are extremely fond of one another would be an understatement. The city is regularly recognized as one of the most “bicycle friendly” towns in the United States by various publications and has over 100 miles of paved bike paths (there’s even a high-wheeled bicycle in the city’s logo.) Even if biking isn’t your thing, there is plenty to explore on foot. Public murals and sculptures – not to mention a plethora of art galleries - can be found all over downtown and in the local University of California Davis campus. Throw in a legendary farmers market and you’d be silly not to visit!
Things to do in Davis
If you’re visiting over the weekend, swing by the famous Davis Farmers Market. If you’re visiting on weekdays anytime between mid-March and mid-October, catch “Picnic in the Park,” which hosts a farmers market, food vendors, pony rides, and live music as well. University of California Davis is a definite must see, as you can reconnect with nature in the 100-acre Arboretum and awaken your curiosity by checking out one of the many events hosted at the Robert Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. If you’d just like to relax during your stay, Davis has you covered: there are three movie theatres located a few blocks from each other, including a vintage art-house cinema. Craft beer lovers will delight in Sudwerk, a brewery close to downtown that is very popular with locals and attracts many visitors from the San Francisco Bay Area.
Day trips from Davis
Visit the nearby town of Woodland to the north (12 miles by bike) and take in the largest collection of agricultural machinery in the world at the California Agriculture Museum, or learn how to wakeboard at Velocity Island Park. Woodland also has fine dining restaurants, more museums, an Opera House, and tasty wines that are waiting to be tasted. The town of Winters (15 miles to the west) boasts a spot on the National Register of Historic Places due to its downtown district, with many wine tasting rooms, restaurants, and specialty shops. If you’d like to have some nice cheese with your wine, stop in at Winters Cheese Company and enjoy! Sacramento lies 15 miles to the east and as California’s Capitol has many activities and sights to choose from if you want to get away from the small town scene.
